Thomas O'Rafferty got his year off to a good start by winning the Supercar Final and the main race of the day, the Super Final, at the opening round of the McLoughlin Industrial Flooring National Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park yesterday.
His Fiesta was the only one of the three Supercars to survive the day, with English visitor Mark Watson's Citroen Xsara an early retirement with engine trouble during the heats. O'Rafferty stayed in front of a terrific duel between Pearse Browne's BMW and the Corsa of Willie Coyne in the Super Final.
Earlier, Browne won the Modified A Final, with Niall Murray taking the Stock Hatch Final ahead of John Ward and Eoin Murray.
Local pair Ger O'Connell and Denis O'Donovan won the Skibbereen 100 Isles Navigation Trial for the second year in succession, heading a trio of Cork crews in the top places. Defending National Champions Colin Duffy and Sam Johnston finished fourth.
