VW to show electric crossover concept in Shanghai

Volkswagen is teasing an electric crossover/SUV at the Shanghai Auto Show next week, writes Brian Byrne, which will be the third concept in the company’s ID electric brand.

Described by VW as a crossover utility vehicle, or CUV, it is a 4-door coupe and SUV in one.

The concept is that the all-electric drivetrain will be as much at home on urban streets as it is on rugged terrain. Destined to offer autonomous driving in whatever production car derives from it, a push on a VW badge on the dash will switch it into self-driving mode, and the steering wheel will retract out of the way into the dashboard.

VW has an objective to have its ID cars in large scale production by the middle of the next century.
