Ford top brand in January market


Ford’s cars and commercial vehicles took the top spot in the 2018 January market, writes Trish Whelan.

Figures from SIMI show January car sales were 37,125 units and 7,193 light commercials were sold during the month.

The car market was slightly down by 4.8pc from 39,005 compared to January 2017 but sales of light commercials saw an increase of 6pc from 6,783 units for the same month last year.

In the combined January market, Ford sold the highest number of vehicles with a total of 5,361 (3,740 cars and 1,621 vans) ahead of Toyota with a combined total of 4,972 and VW in third place with a combined total of 4,897. This is the fourth year in a row that Ford has been the top seller during the January sales period.

Commenting, Ford Ireland Chairman and Managing Director, Ciaran McMahon said: “Our 2017 new Ford Fiesta performed really well in the January market with sales of 1,108, and our Focus continues to be a favourite among Irish motorists with sales of 1,263 units - both models were again in the top five best-sellers list in the country. However, our medium-sized Kuga SUV has seen an increase of more than 30pc in sales during January 2018 versus January of last year. Our Transit van range was again the undisputed leader in van sales with some 1,281 Transit family models sold during the month.”


The top five models in January 2018 were 1. Hyundai Tucson (1,636), 2. Nissan Qashqai (1,427), 3. Ford Focus (1,263), 4. Ford Fiesta (1,108), 5. VW Golf (1,099).
