Volkswagen ICE cars 'may still be produced in 2050'

Volkswagen believes it may still be producing vehicles powered by internal combustion engines by 2050, but only for market areas where there's insufficient electric charging infrastructure, writes Brian Byrne.

Speaking at a conference in Germany, Michael Jost, head of strategy at the company, said the final petrol and diesel platform for its products will be released in 2026.

He said the company is 'gradually fading out combustion engines to the absolute minimum'.

Volkswagen is planning a range of dedicated electric cars in the next few years, beginning with the 2020 MY ID Neo.

Meantime, the latest version of the e-Golf variant (pictured) of its iconic hatchback is currently available.
