The Golf-sized BEV will be priced at below €40,000 in Germany, excluding government incentives. There will later be an entry-level version under €30,000.
The launch edition will be limited to a series of 30,000 vehicles and will have a midrange battery capable of travelling 420 km on a single charge under Europe's WLTP test cycle.
The ID.3 will the first model to be built on the car maker's new MEB electric-car architecture, based on which there have also been Audi, Skoda and Seat concepts.
Volkswagen Ireland says potential buyers can secure the opportunity to order the first ID.3 models to come to the market. at the the new ID. hub on the Volkswagen Ireland website.
