Toyota launches Yaris Cross compact SUV

Toyota Yaris Cross SUV
Toyota Ireland have launched its brand new Yaris Cross compact SUV, writes Trish Whelan.

This authentic SUV that combines the company’s small car expertise and SUV heritage, features raised ground clearance, intelligent AWD and Toyota’s fourth-generation hybrid technology as it is exclusively launching as a self-charging hybrid.

Since Toyota pioneered the use of full hybrid technology in B-segment cars with the first Yaris Hybrid hatchback in 2012.

Yaris Cross benefits from Toyota’s fourth generation hybrid technology and will deliver ‘exceptional performance and efficiency’.

Yaris Cross is built on Toyota’s new GA-B compact car platform and offers a roomy interior within its compact exterior dimensions. It has the same 2,560mm wheelbase as the new Yaris hatchback but is 240mm longer overall meaning more interior space. Ground clearance is 30mm higher.

A raised ride height and the availability of AWD-i intelligent all-wheel drive reinforce its SUV credentials. The brand says this is unique in its class for a hybrid model.

The new generation Yaris and Yaris Cross are the first models to use Toyota’s latest 1.5 hybrid system developed from the larger 2.0 and 2.5 powertrains used in the Corolla, C-HR, RAV4 and Camry.

Because of its compact dimensions, Toyota say the Yaris Cross is well-suited to urban driving.

Features include a power back door for when your hands are full, and an adjustable deck height to allow flexibility of either a secure underfloor compartment or more boot space for larger loads. The deck board itself can be split in two. With all seats up there is a boot space of up to 390 litres.

Adding this newcomer to the line-up will give Toyota an SUV range that spans the B, C and D segments. Commenting on the launch, Steve Tormey, Chief Executive of Toyota Ireland said: “The Yaris Cross is a vibrant and stylish new model to add to the range and will suit our customers who are sophisticated and energetic. It is another example of ‘No more boring cars’ from Toyota and we are looking forward to the arrival of this car in the second half of 2021.”
