Truck manufacturers Daimler and Volvo Group have joined forces for the development of fuel cells for long-haul truck powertrains, writes Brian Byrne.
Daimler will provide its current fuel-cell technology, as used in the production Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell, to the partnership while Volvo Group will invest €600m in the joint venture.
Daimler's truck brands include Mercedes-benz, Fuso, and Freightliner and Western Star in the US. Volvo has its own trucks range as well as owning Mack in the US.
Other truck makers inlcuding Toyota and Hyundai are also involved in fuel-cell powertrains.
The use of sustainably produced hydrogen will be a necessity for viable transfer from fossil fuels engines to fuel-cell.
