New Volkswagen electric car will be 'software-based'

Volkswagen has previewed a new electric saloon car due for production in 2026 which will have a high level of automated driving, writes Brian Byrne.

Project Trinity is described by the company as a 'lighthouse' project which will also be a proving vehicle for an exceptional level of digitisation and software application compared to today's cars.

In a preview of the car and the systems, the company says Trinity will offer different levels of function on demand simply by requesting and paying for them at the time.

Volkswagen says it is developing the automobile into a 'software-based product' which will create conditions for new data-based business models.
