New Ford Ranger Raptor is toughest yet

The second-generation and next-level Ford Ranger Raptor, developed by Ford Performance, comes with enhanced off-road performance, writes Trish Whelan.

This is a purpose-built vehicle that balances daily duties with performance never before seen in a pick-up of Ranger’s size. Ford claims it raises the off-road performance bar as a pick-up built for true enthusiasts and can handle severe, punishing off-road conditions.

Raptor blends raw power with mechanical and technical precision to create the most advanced Ranger ever. It is the toughest Ranger the company has ever made and comes with a unique chassis when compared to the all-new Ranger. The exterior look features bold, strong styling with flared wheel arches and muscular 17-inch alloy wheels, and an integrated step pad and towbar tucked up high to avoid compromising the departure angle. It also gets enhanced underbody protection.

Power is from a twin-turbo 3.0 EcoBoost V6 petrol engine tuned by Ford Performance to produce a targeted 288hp and 491 Nm of torque that Ford say ‘will leave you grinning from ear-to-ear’. The new powertrain delivers effortless acceleration on gravel, dirt, mud and sand. The current 2.0 EcoBlue bi-turbo diesel engine will continue to be available in this Next-Generation Ranger Raptor from 2023.

An advanced new full-time, four-wheel drive system includes electronically-controlled on-demand, two-speed transfer case and locking front and rear differentials which will suit hardcore off-road enthusiasts. Ford engineers have completely redesigned the suspension to enable greater on-road body control while absorbing difficult terrain with ease. On-road drive modes are Normal, Sport and Slippery while off-road choices are Rock Crawl, Sand, Mud/Ruts and Baja intended for off-road use only. This new Raptor also has Trail Control which is like cruise control for off-roading.

The cabin features new jet fighter-inspired sports seats in the front and rear, a premium leather sports heated steering wheel, a 12.4-inch digital cluster and 12-inch centre touchscreen with Ford’s new SYNC 4A connectivity and entertainment system that delivers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at no extra cost.

Drivers can choose their preferred engine sound by pressing a button on the steering wheel, or by selecting a drive mode that uses one of the settings available - Quiet, Normal, Sport for a louder and more dynamic note, and the Baja mode for off-road use only. Customer delivers will start in late summer. No price yet.
