Renault 5 revival in train as an EV

The revival of the iconic Renault 5 next year as an electric car is currently under way in the form of testing of the new platform on which it will be the first car, writes Brian Byrne.

Renault reckons that the manufacturing cost thanks to the new platform's efficiency will be 30pc lower than for the Zoe, the equivalent EV being produced by the company at the moment.

Nine prototypes are being exhaustively tested at Renault facilities in Arvidsjaur in Swedish Lapland and at Lardy outside Paris and Aubevoye in Normandy.

The new car's battery design will also take up less space than an equivalent in use today.

The original Renault 5 was produced between 1972 and 1996 with more than 5.5 million units produced.
