First launched in 1957 as an 'affordable car', the highly successful car was designed Dante Giacosa, and more than 4m units were built through to 1975.

The modern version of the Fiat 500 was launched in 2007.

No increase for Fiat group diesels

FCA Group Ireland will not be increasing the prices of its diesel models in January, though a VRT increase specifically on diesel cars has come into effect, writes Brian Byrne.

This means that diesel versions of Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Jeep models prices will stay the same.

As an example, the Fiat Tipo diesel starting price remains at €17,995.

Fiat Chrysler to showcase electric self-drive vehicle

This is the Fiat Chrysler Portal, a concept electric car which the carmaker will reveal at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in Las Vegas today, writes Brian Byrne.

The 6-passenger vehicle is based on a Chrysler Pacifica MPV and will feature all-electric power, and limited self-driving capability, with a lot of connectivity and screens to keep the passengers entertained.

The battery packs are built into the floor of the vehicle.

Fiat Chrysler is already supplying Pacifica hybrid vehicles to Google, which is using them as test cars in its autonomous driving programme.

FIAT in Ireland changes company name

FIAT Group Automobiles Ireland Ltd has announced that, effective immediately, it has changed its company name to FIAT Chrysler Automobiles Ireland Limited.

The name change, which represents the latest phase in the adoption of the new FIAT Chrysler Automobiles corporate identity, is intended to emphasise the fact that all Group companies worldwide are part of a single organisation.

Fiat say it further underlines the success of the integration and the new, global organisation that has been created between the FIAT and Chrysler groups.

'Baby' Jeep will come before Fiat version

Fiat Chrysler Auto will debut a Jeep variant of the company's new subcompact AWD vehicles in advance of showing the Fiat 500X version, writes Brian Byrne.

The 'baby Jeep' will be shown at Geneva in March, while the 500X will have to wait until Paris in September. Both vehicles will be built on the same line in Elfi in Italy, and it will be the first time a Jeep-branded car has been built only outside the US.

Fiat Chrysler Auto are reported to be expecting that the Jeep will outsell the Fiat. There's still speculation about the name, with money on the 'Laredo' moniker used in entry grade Jeep models in the past.

The 500X will replace the Sedici, the co-production with Suzuki which built both its SX4 and the Fiat variant in its Hungary factory. Fiat has teased with fleeting pictures of the model, showing a much more sculpted and flowing vehicle than any of the 500L variants so far produced.
