GLA shows new approach for Mercedes

Concept shows Mercedes futureMercedes-Benz have revealed a compact premium-class SUV at the Auto Shanghai motor show this week in the form of its Concept GLA, writes Trish Whelan.

It marks a new approach for the brand in the compact SUV segment as this is a sporty and more coupe-like evolution of this category of car. 'Escape every day' is the message that this car conveys to its driver. It also shows the way forward for the A- and B-Class models from the carmaker.

Power is transmitted to the road via the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Under the bonnet is a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine rated at 211hp.

This strong looking and stylish concept has four individual seats, its instrument panel is constructed in several layers, it sits on 20-inch specially created wheels, and the front headlamps feature laser technology; they not only shine more light on the road, but are also capable of projecting pictures or films onto a screen or other surface.

The Concept GLA is also fitted with two cameras, housed in the front roof rail. These can be used for far more than just 3D images taken as the car drives along, they can be removed and even fitted to a mountain bike helmet.
