Mercedes-Benz says a fifth of all rear-end collisions in Germany alone could be preveted if all cars were equipped with its radar-based Distronic-Plus and Brake Assist Plus systems.
The technology would also reduce such accidents by an average of 36 percent on motorways.
The systems warn drivers when they are maintaining too little distance from the vehicle travelling in front and provide support in the event of emergency braking.
Around 40 percent of all German customers buying new S-Class vehicles equip them with this safety technology.
