The Opel Insignia scraped into first place in the European Car of the Year 2009 by just one vote from from Ford's Fiesta.The Insignia, which got relatively poor votes from Britain where it is a Vauxhall brand, achieved 321 votes, compared to the 320 of the Fiesta.
The VW Golf came in third with 223 votes.
The competition is organised by a panel of journalists from 23 countries, including Ireland.
