Sales still down

Car sales dropped by 77 percent last month on the same period last year. Total sales for the month of July fell to 3,759 units, against 16,343 units for July ’08.

When these are adjusted to take account of the effect of the CO2 based tax system introduced in July last year, the underlying trend is closer to 67 percent, according to Ford Ireland MD Eddie Murphy. He now expects the out-turn sales of new cars to be around 57,000 units.

The Ford Focus with sales of 2,556 through July retained its position as the top selling car in Ireland for 2009.

The commercial vehicle sector for July ’09 was down 45 percent on July ’08 figures (1,071 versus 1,968).

In the seven months of this year Ford sold 7,264 units (14.4 percent), from Toyota with 6,881 (13.6 percent), VW with 5,427 (10.7 percent), Nissan at 4,339 (8.6 percent), Opel with 3,515 (7.0 percent). Total industry sales for the period are 50,547.

July was the 18th month in a row that car sales have fallen year-on-year.
