Only about 10 percent of Irish people buying cars privately do a check on the provenance of the car, compared to 30 percent of UK private buyers.
That's according to Shane Teskey of Motorcheck.ie, who added that this could mean that cars from the UK with dubious histories could be being diverted to the Irish market.
He was speaking at a seminar on statistics collection and analysis at the Europa Campus in Swords, Co Dublin.
