Concerns about 'networking' cars

A scary report from the US shows that the electronic systems in cars can be hijacked, giving the hacker control of engines and brakes.

The experiments were carried out for the Center for Automotive Embedded Systems Security, an organisation which explores emerging automotive technology.

The researcher did have physical access to the car to set up the electronic hijacking, but was then able to externally disengage and activate the brakes outside the driver's control.

The study, which will be officially presented next week, suggests that serious consideration to such activity will have to be given in relation to the increased 'networking' of cars as proposed by many carmakers.
