New CLS will have Band B tax status

A 4-cylinder engine to be used in the next generation CLS will enable the car to take a Band B status in automatic form when it gets to Ireland before next summer, writes Brian Byrne from the international press launch of the car in Florence.

The 250 CDI version of the brand's luxury large coupe will feature the 2.2 204hp diesel which has already made the S-Class fitted with it the most efficient large luxury saloon in its class.

The 250 CDI will be available some two months after the launch of the car in Ireland with the 350 CDI V6 diesel, but is expected to be responsible for four out of each five new generation CLSs sold here.

No price has been revealed for the new cars yet, but the current entry price for the 350 CDI is €87,190, and the car is a Band F for tax purposes. The new generation 350 CDI will be in Band D, attracting road tax of just €447 at current rates.

A First View review of the car will be posted shortly.
