Check that battery

Dead batteries are the biggest reason for callouts for AA Ireland's mobile patrols.

Some 30 percent of the 140,000 problems dealt with in the last year were to dead batteries. Most of them were simply that the batteries had gone beyond their useful life.

A 'high' number were self-inflicted by the motorists concerned, caused by leaving lighrs on or using accessories for long periods with the engine switched off.

The onset of the cold weather will increase the likelihood of an older battery failing.
