Car security awards announced

The British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards 2011 have just been released following extensive testing at the Thatcham Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre.

BIVSA is supported by UK insurers and the Department for Transport there.

Volkswagen scooped the overall manufacturer award for cars for the second year in a row with every variant in 11 separate model ranges. Volkswagen also won best overall van manufacturer for the first time, with five separate model ranges.

With 21 separate awards for cars and vans, BIVSA is seen as the pinnacle for vehicle manufacturers in terms of recognition of their work in making vehicles more secure and reducing vehicle crime. The awards are seen as being of huge value in a climate of continuing austerity when it would be easy to lower standards.

This year's ceremony featured additional recognition for the most secure manufacturer in more than one country with the introduction of a new 'International Vehicle Security Award'.
