A new small city car being developed by Opel will be more expensive than the current smallest offering from the company, the Agila, writes Brian Byrne.
That's in line with GM's plans to reposition Opel upwards to challenge Volkswagen seriously on their home turf of Germany, Europe's largest car market.
To be revealed next year, perhaps at a mid-year car show, the 'Junior' will go on sale for the 2013 market period. It will be based on the Trixx concept pictured above.
Opel is also developing a new coupe-cabriolet based on a stretched Astra platform, which will revive the Calibra nameplate.
And the company is also planning a compact SUV to challenge Nissan's Qashqai, initially in 5-seat and launching in 2012, according to GM Europe boss Nick Reilly.
GM's future strategy will aim to expand the Chevrolet brand in Europe as its budget/value brand, pushing Opel up the mass-market 'premium' ladder.
