Mercedes-Benz is aggressively targeting the compact family car segment with the new A-Class, writes Brian Byrne, announcing a €24,000 starting price in some European markets when it launches in September.
The car, which drops the boxy shape of its predecessor for a very sexy silhouette aimed at attracting a much younger age group, will have powertrains ranging from 109-211hp with 1.5 and 1.8 diesels, and 1.6 and 2.0 petrol options.
A radar-based collision warning system will be among the standard technological features. Other standards in the base models are aircon, electric windows all round, and multifunction steering wheel.
There will be three grades in most markets, Urban, Style and AMG Sport.
