Volkswagen goes to 3-year warranty

All Volkswagens sold in Ireland from January will have a 3-year factory warranty, writes Brian Byrne.

“Our dealers are delighted with the move,” says John Donegan of the Volkswagen division of VW Group Ireland. “It has become an issue in Ireland in recent years, with the provision of longer warranties by a number of competing brands.”

The previous warranty duration was two years. Both Skoda and SEAT within the Volkswagen Group went to three years earlier this year.

Japanese brands have traditionally given 3-year warranties, and in recent years Hyundai moved with a 5-year guarantee and Kia gives seven years.

A number of other brands have offered warranty extensions, but generally these have been insurance based, with the manufacturer outsourcing the liability.
