BMW's 2 Series MPV for Geneva?

The big news for BMW at the Geneva Motor Show in March will be the 2 Series, writes Brian Byrne. Although the coupe version (above) will already have appeared at Detroit in January, a compact MPV version based on the Active Tourer concept is expected to debut there.

Widely expected to be billed as the 2 Series Active Tourer, the car will fill an extended hatchback role in the 5-seat format, while reports also suggest that a 7-seat variant is planned.

The Concept Active Tourer is a high-roof hatchback first shown in Paris in September 2012.

The concept is powered by a new 3-cylinder 1.5 BMW petrol engine, which has debuted in the new Mini debuted at the Los Angeles Motor Show recently, and an electric motor which drives the rear wheels, giving AWD capability.

If a production hybrid version comes along, the company says CO2 emissions will be of the order of 60k/km, with a 30km range running on electric power alone.
