The BMW owned company expects the car will bring new customers to it in a segment where seven out of ten sales are 5-door.
The company already produces a 5-door in the larger Countryman.
The new car will be a 3-seater in the back, also a more favoured option in the segment. The company says it has more head- and leg-room than the 3-door hatch.
It goes on sale in Europe at the end of October.
