Opel is to launch a new medium SUV in 2017, to complement the compact Mokka X, writes Brian Byrne. It will be in addition to the newly announced Crossland X, a new compact SUV to be based on the Peugeot 2008.
The medium vehicle will be based on the latest 3008 from Peugeot, revealed at the recent Paris Motor Show. Peugeot has morphed the 3008/5008 MPV range into crossover/SUVs to capitalise on the growth in that sector.
The medium crossover will replace the 7-seat Zafira MPV, and will bring Opel back into the SUV/crossover space it had with the Antara, discontinued in 2015. The Crossland X will replace the Meriva MPV.
Opel is also working on a large SUV, based on a platform currently used by Cadillac, Chevrolet and Buick, and which will be an updated version of that underpinning the Insignia. Intended to compete with Ford's Edge, Hyundai's Santa Fe and Kia's Sorento, it is expected to offer a more sporty style.
