The first electric Mercedes-Benz car will arrive in the autumn of 2019, writes Brian Byrne.
Under the EQ brand which will label all of the Daimler electric models, it will be the EQC, a 5-seat coupe based on the GLC and first revealed as a close-to-production concept at the last Paris Motor Show.
It will have two electric motors mounted front and rear, powered by an 80kWh battery.
Scaleable battery components will allow other outputs and ranges.
Daimler says the car will be capable of reaching 100km/h in 5.1 seconds.
It will feature permanent all wheel drive thanks to the dual electric motors.
A range of up to 500km is forecast, with the ability to charge up to 80pc of the battery in 40 minutes.
Mercedes-Benz chief executive in Ireland Stephen Byrne said EQ dealers will be appointed from the brand's current dealer network.
