Peugeot Ireland has launched a number of cars under its extensive electrification programme, writes Brian Byrne and Trish Whelan.

New arrivals include the all-new e-208 which retails from €27,334, inclusive of SEAI grant and VRT relief, and comes with a 100KW (136hp) electric unit with 50kWh battery developing 260Nm of torque for instant response. It can do 0-100km/h in 8.1 secs and has a range of 340kms. It is the only electric car in its segment. The battery is guaranteed for 8 years or 160,000 for up to 70pc retention certifiable by the Peugeot dealer network. The e-208 gets the same interior and boot space as the Internal Combustion models (ICE) as the batteries are under the floor.

The Hybrid4 version of the 3008 and 508 ranges have passed stringent certifications tests under the new WLTP protocol and qualify for the newly calculated grant thresholds now applicable; under new rules, plug-in hybrids must now emit less than 50g/km C02 and travel more than 50km in all-electric model to qualify for the €5,000 SEAI grant and €2,500 VRT relief schemes.

There are also 130bhp/155bhp petrols; the diesel is a 1.5 BlueHDi 100bhp priced from €25,900. The brand's excellent Grip Control is offered and Peugeot provide a spare wheel as standard in all their passenger cars, except for EV models. An electrified 2008 is due in April with a range of 320kms WLTP.

The SUV 3008 Hybrid4 300bhp AWD model, available in the top of the range GT Line and GT trims, achieves 29g/km C02 (1.3 L/100kms) and has a 59km range in 100pc electric mode. It combines a 200hp PureTech petrol engine with two electric motors and can do from 0-100km/h in 5.9 secs. The battery capacity is 13.2kWh for a 100pc electric range. A full charge takes 1h45 when using a Wallbox. AWD mode provides improved traction on roads or difficult terrain.
In April, it will be joined by a 225bhp 2WD Hybrid version combining a 180hp petrol engine with a 110hp (80kW) electric motor located at the front of the car coupled to the e-EAT8 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The 508 fastback achieves 29g C02/km and 54km in all-electric mode.

The 508 Hybrid and SW estate Hybrid combine a 180bhp petrol engine with a 110bhp (80kW) electric motor for a combined power of 225bhp. Charging also takes 1h45 with a Wallbox (optional 6.6 kW charger, 32A).
Built on Peugeot’s EMP2 platform, boot volumes are the same as the ICE versions (487 litres for the 508 and 530 litres for the SW. New driving modes are a Zero Emission 100pc electric mode; an exhilarating Sport mode; a Hybrid mode; and Comfort mode.
The 3008 Allure PHEV two-wheel drive model retails from €37,995 (plus charges) while the 508 Allure PHEV is from €38,900 (plus charges). Prices are inclusive of VRT relief and the SEAI grant.
An eBoxer LCV will arrive mid this year and an ePartner/eRifter will follow next year.
By 2023, 100pc of the Peugeot passenger car and light commercial vehicles range will offer an electrified version.

At the launch presentation Colin Sheridan of Peugeot said: “The Government needs to give us information on how it intends to treat the taxation on cars when the full WLTP regime comes into force at the end of this year because we will need to make decisions on model allocations.” He also said that the last Budget which removed SEAI grants to companies for electric cars has proved counter productive and he quoted sales figures for electric cars year-to-date which he said should have been higher.
