Electrified mobility at climate conference

World leaders attending the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow in November will be ferried around in a fleet of electrified Jaguars and Land Rovers, writes Brian Byrne.

They will include the Jaguar I-Pace all-electric SUV. Jaguar Land Rover are aiming the become a net carbon zero car manufacturer by 2039.

Upshift for CX-5

Mazda will be offering an updated version of its key CX-5 model in Europe next year, writes Brian Byrne, with significant design enhancements to the front grille and bumper styling and technical tweaks to make it an even more refined car.

Changes to the suspension, seats and bodyshell make the car quieter and more comfortable. There's now a switch-controlled Drive Mode, and there's a new off-road mode to the AWD versions. Three new grades offer detail external differences reflecting off-road, sports, and luxury interests.

The CX-5 represents 21pc of Mazda's European sales.

An arresting electric

A version of the Mustang Mach-E electric car for use by UK police forces has been developed in concept form by Ford and is currently under evaluation, writes Brian Byrne.

Police forces in the UK are already interested, including the London Metropolitan Police Force which has requested a full evaluation of the special version after appraising the standard Mach-E. The car is based on the Standard Range AWD version which has a range of around 600km, with an acceleration for 0-100km/h in 3.7s. An Extended Range version is envisaged.

The conversion of the original Mach-E was carried out by Ford’s long term partner to the blue light industry, Safeguard SVP, a specialist constructor based in Essex. Among the equipment fitted to the concept car are bespoke mounting pods and brackets to ensure suitable locations are found for operational use, with minimal damage to the vehicle.

All lighting is LED with very low power consumption to reduce current draw from the vehicle’s 12V power system. The car's blue light system runs off the 12v battery, and so doesn't affect range.

First look at Renault Arkana

Renault Ireland launched its new Arkana Crossover/SUV to the motoring press on Monday last in the plush Palmerstown Manor House outside Naas in Co Kildare, writes Trish Whelan. Arkana is Renault’s first purpose-built hybrid and the first SUV model with sleek coupe styling.

It sits above its sibling Captur in the range and is part of the brand’s C-segment offering which accounts for almost 30pc of all new cars sold in Ireland. At the presentation, Jeremy Warnock, Renault Ireland Group Product Manager, outlined the importance of having a strong contender in this segment in order to push sales volume. He said Arkana is billed as being ‘Sporty, Special and Hybrid’ and had achieved 20,000 orders in its first four months on sale in Europe.

This mid-sized family car is part of the brand’s E-Tech range and is 25pc more efficient than a traditional ICE SUV. Three trims are offered — Iconic, S Edition and R.S. Line. Customers have a choice of advanced E-Tech 145 hybrid or TCe electrified powertrains. The Mild Hybrid 1.3, 140hp turbocharged TCe petrol engine, with a 7-speed automatic gearbox, is combined with 12V Mild Hybrid technology to give an extra 20 Nm torque which helps with acceleration. It has a claimed fuel economy of 5.7L/100kms (50mpg) and C02 emissions of 130g/km.

The E-Tech Hybrid version uses a 1.6 petrol engine with a 1.2 kWh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, offering a combined output of 145bhp, plus 148 Nm of torque from the petrol engine and 250 Nm from the electric motors. C02 emissions are 111g/km and fuel economy a claimed 4.8 L/100km (59 mpg).

At first sight of the car in the metal, Arkana is a very attractive looking vehicle with a character of its own. We liked the whole Crossover/SUV styling and the coupe-like slope to the roof. The top specced R.S. Line has a more muscular design with sporty details inside and out. The sporty look doesn’t compromise on either interior space or boot capacity which is a generous 513 litres (480 on the E-Tech Hybrid version). Both versions are available with a split boot floor. Rear seats can fold leaving a level, flat load area for bulkier items.

The spacious interior offers the same big headroom for those in the rear as is enjoyed by front seat passengers, despite the slope of the roof. Based on the CMF-B modular platform, Arkana is longer than the brand’s Koleus SUV and this translates into more rear legroom. The car also offers a high driving position which provides easy access. Iconic models feature the latest 7.0-inch Easy Link touchscreen infotainment system; a 9.3-inch portrait-oriented system is standard on S Edition and R.S. Line trim levels.

Paddy Magee, Renault Group Ireland Country Operations Director (above left, with Jeremy Warnock), said Arkana ‘gives us a fighter in the C-segment that we can build on — it’s a stepping stone to the future for the brand as it offers the best of both worlds and is something different in the SUV market’. However, he added, supply could be an issue due to the first allocations having sold out in just 18 days. He expects a 50-50 engine mix but believes most buyers will go for either the mid-level S Edition or the top RS Line spec.

“The Mild Hybrid version will suit those who like the feel of an engine revving up through the gears while the E-Tech will make a lot of sense for those who do mostly urban driving and it gives better running costs.”

On a short test drive at launch in the mild hybrid version, we found it proved an easy and comfortable drive on local roads. I have booked the car for a week’s test drive in the coming weeks. With its ‘huge’ suite of standard Active Safety equipment said to ‘cover almost everything that helps prevent traffic accidents’, Arkana has been awarded a maximum five stars in safety crash tests by Euro NCAP.

Arkana is priced from €28,990-€33,690 and is available to pre-order at Renault dealerships.

Munich: A brace of Kias shown

Kia has two new models at its booth in the Munich IAA Mobility show this week, both of which we'll see in Ireland before the end of the year, writes Brian Byrne.

The EV6 (above) coming in late October is the first Kia on a dedicated EV platform shared with Hyundai, and is the forerunner of a series of electric cars.

The new generation Sportage will also arrive in petrol and diesel versions towards the end of 2021, and a plug-in hybrid variant will be here next spring.

New Dacia Duster goes on sale

Dacia have been delivering affordable, value-for-money vehicles to the Irish market since the brand launched here in 2013, writes Trish Whelan.

While their latest Sandero models have been making waves in recent months, the Duster, launched in 2013, quickly earned a reputation for delivering all the benefits of an SUV at a city car price. More than 14,500 Dusters have been sold here so far.

Now, the brand has introduced its newest Duster (from €19,990), aimed both at customers who are looking for a comfortable, attractive SUV and those who want a robust, versatile 4x4 as the car is available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions. Three trims are offered: Essential, Comfort and Prestige.

This latest Duster has been given a more contemporary design with improved aerodynamics for greater efficiency along with new LED lights and grille design giving the car a stronger personality with improved C02 emissions and fuel consumption.

This latest model is available with a new 8-inch touchscreen and dual-clutch automatic EDC gearbox as well as new seating upholstery.

A suite of standard new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems includes Park Assist, Hill Start, Adaptive Hill Descent Control for 4x4 versions, and a Multiview camera useful for parking manoeuvres or in tricky off-road situations.

The engine line-up includes a Bi-Fuel (petrol-LPG) TCe 100 2WD combined with a six-speed manual transmission; a dCi 115 diesel (2WD or 4WD) with manual transmission, and a TCe 150 petrol (2WD) matched with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The capacity of the LPG tank on the Bi-Fuel version has been increased by 50pc or 49.8 litres. Annual road tax is from €200-€270.

New Duster is now available at Dacia dealerships.

Munich: Continental's green black

It's the least interesting part of a car for most owners, but a new concept tyre from Continental was a key exhibit at the Munich Mobility show, writes Brian Byrne.

The Conti GreenConcept uses primarily traceable, renewable and recycled raw materials. It also features a renewable tread strip, and is designed for sensor-equipped smart vehicles.

The Conti GreenConcept's makeup includes 35pc renewable materials, with natural rubber from dandelions, silicate from the ash of rice husks, vegetable oils and resins. The 17pc recyclable elements include reclaimed steel and recovered carbon black, and polyester from recycled plastic bottles for the tyre’s casing. The tyre is 40pc lighter than current equivalents and — important for EV range — has a 25pc less rolling resistance.

Continental's David O’Donnell, the Irishman responsible for Continental’s global tyre original equipment business, said the concept study exemplifies Continental’s ongoing efforts to fully transition its global tyre production to sustainable materials.

Munich: Rebel-rousing from Cupra

An emotion-raising concept for a future urban electric car by Cupra made its debut at the opening of a new Cupra City Garage in Munich, writes Brian Byrne.

The UrbanRebel is described as a 'radical interpretation' of an urban electric vehicle for 2025. It will follow the Born to be launched later this year, and the Tavascan coming in 2024.

Cupra's CEO Wayne Griffiths says the company has the ambition to become a fully electric brand by 2030.

Munich: Doing a Mini strip

It's a Mini stripped back to the bare essentials, the keynote on the brand's stand at Munich, writes Brian Byrne. Detail design — or undesign — is by British fashion designer Paul Smith, and the Mini Strip name says it all.

The body is unpainted except for a thin clear glaze to protect the metal. The recycled perspex roof shows the structure of the car painted blue. Recycled plastic covers where the trademark grille would be. Wheel arch covers are pinned to the metal with open screws.

Inside, the plastic and wood and metal trims have been ditched in favour of a fully-recyclable knitted fabric covering. And there are no instruments, just a dock for a mobile phone which then does all that work. The one-off is based on the Mini Electric, and maybe it all increases the range.

A minimalist treatment for what, in the end, has turned out to be a minimalist motor show.

Munich: Audi's private jet for the road

Audi presented its Grandsphere concept study at the Munich IAA, which it describes as a 'private jet for the road', writes Brian Byrne.

Probably previewing a production new A8, the very sleek large coupe-styled sedan imagines Level 4 automated driving as well as a lounge interior. There are no screens or instruments at first connect, but whatever is needed for the kind of driving being done is projected below the windscreen. The steering wheel folds away behind the wood trim when not needed.

The electric powertrain delivers a range of up to 750kms, with a suitable charging point pumping in 300kms of range in ten minutes. Given the brand's fast evolution to electrification already, as also has its parent company, we'll likely see production results of this study sooner rather than later.

Munich: Dacia Joggers in

The centrepiece of the Dacia presentation at Munich's Motor Show is the Jogger, a 7-seat family car, writes Brian Byrne. The company defines it not as an SUV, nor an MPV, or an estate, but simply a large family car that tales in the best elements of each of those.

Jogger will be available with two engines, including the new TCe 110 turbocharged petrol engine. There will also be the LPG TCe 100 Bi-Fuel engine which debuted here in the recently-renewed Sandero Stepway. Dacia’s first hybrid powertrain option will be available in the model from 2023.

First deliveries of the Jogger are expected in the early part of next year.

Munich: Take it easy with Ford Mindfulness

Ford's presentation at the Munich Motor Show is designed to make you relax, its Kuga-based Mindfulness Concept Car designed as a place to get away from the stresses of the world outside, writes Brian Byrne.

So, it starts when you blip the unlock, with the climate control giving a burst of fresh air through the car before you get in. There's a UVC light diode system that stops the reproduction of viruses and germs. The seat works with a wearable monitor to provide feedback on breathing and heart rates, and there's a Power Nap function that slips the seat-back into recline with a headrest giving appropriate neck support while dozing.

And when parked for a break, you can hit a button on the screen to get yoga advice suitable for a quick tune-up on a long drive. Also just the job for a tired journo to take a snooze at a busy motor show? Or a busy Chancellor?
