'Alarming' number of drivers don't do winter checks

Three in ten Irish motorists don't ever, or rarely perform winter checks on their cars, according to a survey conducted by motor insurer AA Ireland, writes Brian Byrne. The survey of 1,821 of the company's customers was done ahead of the winter blast that saw many stranded by snowy conditions across the southern part of the country.

AA Ireland says that figure is 'alarming' and urges motorists to carry out checks that include coolant and windscreen wash levels, tyres and battery condition — both of those last become critical in sub-zero driving conditions.

Simple measures such as checking tyre pressures and thread depths, replacing worn wipers, and carrying an emergency kit can make a significant difference during colder months. As temperatures continue to drop, it’s important to watch out for Met Eireann weather warnings in your area, the advice would be avoid unnecessary journeys where possible. Always allow extra time for any winter journeys as traffic can occasionally be heavier than usual.
