The Irish Government has approved new e-scooter regulations led by Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien and Road Safety Minister Seán Canney, writes Brian Byrne. Key changes include raising the minimum age for e-scooter users to 18, mandating helmets and high-visibility clothing, increasing fines for e-scooter offences, and doubling fees for detained e-scooters.
The Department of Transport will pause public e-scooter scheme funding and explore further proposals like vehicle registration and insurance.
Meanwhile, reforms at the Road Safety Authority (RSA) will introduce a Road Safety Ambassadors Programme, expand education initiatives, and improve driver services. The National Vehicle and Driver File, Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2026 will facilitate traffic collision data sharing, consider careless driving charges, and abolish paper motor tax discs.
