Harrods takes a trip down memory lane

The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is taking place on Sunday, 3 November. It is the world's longest running and greatest motoring celebration with more than 400 veteran cars taking part.

This year, Harrod's famous department store in Knightsbridge has become an Offical Partner and will supply participants with well deserved refreshments at the mid-way check-point in Sussex.

The partnership has another connection as among the some 33 'horseless carriages' that took part in the original Emancipation Run on 14 November 1896 was one of the very first Harrods delivery vans (pictured above) which was a Panhard-Levassor. And the Managing Director of Harrods will be participating in this year's Veteran Car Run driving an electrically powered Waverley dating back to 1901.

IVVCC planning jubilee celebrations

A Golden Jubilee Grand Tour of Ireland and a special running of the Gordon Bennett Rally are among the events being planned to mark the 50th anniversary of the Irish Veteran & Vintage Car Club next year.

The club has over 650 members and 50 affiliated clubs across Ireland. Its first president was the late Knollys Stokes who was elected to office in 1964.

A 170-page book recalling the people, cars and events that make up the club’s history will be published next October. Compiled and edited by club member Anselm Aherne, it is supported by the sponsorship of Motor Distributors Limited.

Affiliated to FIVA, the Paris-based Federation Internationale Des Vehicules Anciens, the club is part of a membership of 1.5 million spanning some 62 countries worldwide.

Amongst the most cherished vehicles preserved by IVVCC members is Ireland’s first motor car—a Benz Velo Comfortable imported here in 1898 by Dr Colohan, then owner of what is now the Grand Hotel in Malahide.

Restored to its original condition by IVVCC member Denis Dowdall, the vehicle registered IK 52 is part of a collection of historic vehicles currently in the possession of Motor Distributors Limited.

Denis is pictured here on the right in the car, with the late Bill Duffy, then (2002) Mercedes-Benz Sales Manager with MDL.

'Hazzard' stunt man in Trim next weekend

A member of the team behind the famous car stunts in the film The Dukes of Hazzard is coming to the Vintage and Veteran Car Rally in Trim, which is being held next weekend, writes Tony Conlon.

It's the 26th year of the show, which raises funds for charity.

Tom Sarmento is pictured above with Deputy Ray Butler, Seamus Quinn (Chairman of Trim V&V) and Nicky Fagan owner of the replica 1969 Dodge Charger which  was one of the show's highlights. Tom worked in Universal Studios as a mechanic and stunt driver/organiser for such well-known TV shows as Quincy, BJ and the Bear and The Rockford Files. He joined Warner Brothers in 1979 and from then until 1985 he was lead mechanic for The Dukes of Hazzard. It was his job to keep the General Lee car running for all those spectacular car stunts.

It was hard on the cars. “We went through 317 General Lee cars and over 1,000 Roscoe Sheriff and bad guy cars in The Dukes of Hazzard,” says Tom, now the producer and creator of the Hazzard County Stunt Team and has organised the stunts for Dukes of Hazzard stuntmen reunions throughout the United States.

For this year’s Trim Vintage and Veteran Rally, all the old vehicles are being allowed to participate for free. The show takes place on Sunday 17 July at the Porch Fields (off the ring road).

The attractions on this family day include helicopter rides, auto jumble, fun fare, dog show, RSA road safety show, and new car displays from many brands that sell in Ireland.

There will also be live music, plenty of prizes and much more.
