BMW debuts i8 Roadster at Los Angeles

BMW is debuting its i8 Roadster at the Los Angeles Auto Show, alongside an updated version of the i8 Coupe, writes Brian Byrne.

The electrically-operated roof can be folded in 15 seconds, and this can be carried out at speeds of up to 50km/h.

Like the i8 Coupe, much use is made of carbon-fibre and aluminium.

The upgrade has increased the range of the i8 Coupe to 55km on electric power alone. The 1.5 3-cylinder petrol engine generates up to 231hp on its own, while the combined hybrid output is rated at 374hp, allowing a 4.4s sprint to 100km/h.

Mazda reveals now Mazda6

Mazda has re-engineered its Mazda6 saloon and revealed it at the Los Angeles Auto Show, writes Brian Byrne.

In addition to enhancing the highly-regarded styling of the outgoing model, the interior is all-new. The chassis has also been thoroughly revised to provide a more supple ride, greater agility and improved NVH

A new 2.5 turbocharged petrol engine is available for the North American market which is claimed to provide the same experience as  4.0 V8.

No details yet on European arrival or specification.

New generation CLS revealed

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the third generation of its CLS 4-door coupe at the Los Angeles Auto Show, writes Brian Byrne.

A more aggressive grille treatment is a highlight feature of the body changes, which overall maintain the design ethos of the first CLS introduced in 2003.

The new car will have new 4- and 6-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and is scheduled to arrive in first markets next March.

Smart cars become mobile postboxes

Daimler is conducting a pilot test programme in Hamburg where owners of Smart cars can have parcels delivered directly to the boot of their cars wherever they have parked them, writes Brian Byrne.

Previous similar programmes in Cologne, Bonn and Berlin have required the car owners to have their cars parked at their home address.

The extension of the programme also allows participants to have their goods ordered from any online shop, and parcels can also be sent from individuals.

The scheme is smartphone-based and works with the help of an app.

Köping joins Volvo Selekt programme

Every Volvo Selekt used car must pass over 100 checks and only Volvo Genuine Parts are used during preparation.

Selekt cars are always under five years old, with less than 150,000km on the clock. Each car also receives software upgrades. Strong revision to Transit Custom

A strongly revised Transit Custom van due in Ireland in March will reinforce Ford's strong position in the 1-tonne van class, writes Brian Byrne.

With significant improvements outside, inside and under the hood, the latest iteration of the Custom builds on the elements which have made the vehicle a go-to for those who favour the blue oval brand in the medium van space.

As befits the company whose founder is often credited with the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' advice, the basic sound build and practical design of the Custom hasn't been tinkered with. Indeed, nothing has been 'tinkered' with, any changes are substantial.

Starting with the look. The face of the Transit Custom is now more strongly styled, and has been brought fully into line with the company's passenger cars design. This includes the one-piece trapezoidal grille, much more stylish lights, and a redesigned lower air intake. Apart from engineering reasons, it all makes the van look more purposeful. There are also reshaped bits to the bodywork.

Inside the cabin, there's been a complete reworking along the lines of the interior of the new Ford Fiesta, which very much modernises the dashboard and instruments layout. There are more storage spaces too, and the whole aesthetic has been upgraded with more premium materials. Harder wearing seating material too, which apparently has been seriously tortured by Ford's accelerated wear test equipment.

The powertrains are the new 2.0 diesels that were introduced by Ford last year, replacing the 2.2 units that had underpinned Transits up to then. A selection of drives this week in Germany showed they're efficient, quiet, and pull well depending on the version chosen and the application. Specifically the engine is available in 105/130/170hp versions, with 6-speed manual and automatic choices.

An EcoNetic option is aimed at the operator for whom fuel economy is particularly important. With stop-start, an accelerator system which actively aids an efficient driving style, a limiter to 100km/h, and low rolling resistance tyres, this version offers a 6pc improvement in fuel economy over the most efficient Transit Custom up to now.

The revised van will also be available with all the safety technologies which have been developed for Ford's passenger cars. Some are adapted and enhanced to better suit the needs of commercial vehicles, especially the radar-operated approaching vehicle monitoring system used when reversing out of a nose in parking space. It will even warn of approaching cyclists. The pre-collision warning system is now improved to respond to imminent situations even in darkness by the illumination of the van's lights.

The revision of the Transit Custom is the first step in a complete upgrade of Ford's commercial vehicles over the next 18 months. But there's big movement planned for the commercials power options too. Some 20 customer companies are taking delivery of plug-in hybrid variants of the Transit Custom before the end of this year, for evaluation before the version is put fully on sale.

This electrified powertrain will have its electric motor as the primary motive element, from a battery that can charged while the vehicle is not being used, and can also operated for long distances through a 1.0 petrol engine used as a generator of electricity. On electric power alone, the version will offer a 50km range, and up to 500km from the petrol-hybrid combination.

Van and drone deliveries tested in real life

In what is claimed as a global first, Mercedes-Benz has used a combination of vans and drones to deliver packages to homes in a trial in Zurich, Switzerland, writes Brian Byrne.

The deliveries, which took place between 25 September and 13 October, were a test for on-demand delivery of e-commerce orders.

A total of around 100 flights were made without incident over the city of Zurich. The project made use of two drones and two Mercedes-Benz Vito vans with integrated landing platforms. Technology installed in the vehicle roofs ensured that landings were accurate and safe.

The results of the tests are currently being analysed.

New Mokka X in the works

The current Mokka X.
Opel is working on a second-generation Mokka X which will replace the current version in 2019, writes Brian Byrne.

The new model will be built on the PSA Peugeot-Citroen Group's EMP1 platform which underpins such cars as the DS3.

Following the purchase of Opel by PSA, all of the German maker's models are scheduled to be changed to non-GM platforms in order to avoid royalties to the US carmaker.

The current Mokka debuted at Geneva in 2012.

In looks, the new version is lower, longer and more spacious than the previous model — Ireland's best-selling large MPV last year — but retains the same height  of 1.64m. Increased length ensures more room for occupants including more knee room for those in the second row. All three separate seats here fold and tilt and all have Isofix child seat anchor points. Two are removable.

The two rear seats can fold flat or be taken out. Boot capacity is up to 1,060 litres with five seats in use, more than in the original 5008.

Standard features from Access trim include Peugeot's iCockpit interior which comprises a compact steering wheel, a 12.3-inch head-up digital instrument panel, 8-inch touchscreen, multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and 3 x 12V sockets.

Ultra-efficient engines include the award-winning 1.2 130hp turbo petrol engine, with both manual or automatic transmission; and the 1.6 petrol 165hp 6-speed automatic. The 1.6 and 2.0 diesel engines, again with manual and automatic transmission choices, range between 100hp-180hp. The range-topping GT version is a 2.0 diesel 180hp 6-speed automatic.

Peugeot claims to have the lowest petrol C02 emissions of from 115g/km, and from 105g/km C02 for its diesel engines over key competitors Nissan X-Trail, Skoda Kodiaq and Range Rover Discovery and Hyundai Santa Fe (for diesel).

The new 5008 has secured the maximum five stars safety rating from Euro NCAP.

At the car's launch last week, Colin Sheridan of Peugeot Ireland said the new 5008 'is made for Ireland with its low C02 emissions' and that the brand 'is looking at the car to become the benchmark of the D-segment large 7-seat SUV segment by providing an arsenal of comfort and safety features'.

A spokesman for the Motorsport Ireland judging panel said that selection of the three finalists was a very difficult task. “All those interviewed deserved to be there and separating the drivers into a final three from such a pool of young talent was not an easy task,” the spokesman said. “One thing that is certain is that some of those that narrowly missed out this year will be in front of the judging panel again.

“The eventual winner will be an ambassador for Motorsport and, like their predecessors, we hope will go on to inspire more people in Ireland to engage with our sport. They have some very strong role models like Craig Breen and Keith Cronin to lean on for help and inspiration as their careers progress both domestically and internationally. We have no doubt that any of the finalists can fill this role and we look forward to announcing the winner at our Beta Irish Motorsport awards ceremony in early December.”

The internationally-recognised Billy Coleman Award is one of the most prestigious accolades that any young driver on the island of Ireland can aspire to. It comes with a prize valued at €50,000 in support to help the winner develop their career.

Three finalists named for Sexton Trophy

Dempsey fends off some stiff opposition at Castle Combe
A 17-year-old who received the top marks in his school for his Leaving Certificate, a winner of the UK Porsche Championship and the holder of a Scottish record, are the three drivers selected as finalists in the Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year award, writes Richard Burke.

Jordan Dempsey, from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, has been named alongside Charlie Eastwood (22), from Castlereigh, Belfast, and James Roe (19), from Bodenstown, Co Kildare, in the race for the prestigious Sexton Trophy and €50,000!

Charlie Eastwood, Porsche Carrera GB Pro Champion
The three drivers were drawn from six candidates who were nominated on the back of their performances during the course of this year. They were selected from a range of track racing disciplines and underwent a rigorous selection process in front of a judging panel made up from representatives of the racing community and the media.

Charlie Eastwood won the Porsche Carrera Championship in the UK. In what was an extremely competitive 14-race season, he clinched the title on the last lap of the final race in Brands Hatch to be crowned 2017 champion.

James Roe, June 2017
James Roe was a standout competitor in the Formula Ford class in Ireland and the UK. He secured several notable finishes during the season, including setting a new lap record at Knockhill in Fife, Scotland, that had previously stood for ten years.

Jordan Dempsey spent the initial part of the race season concentrating on his Leaving Cert at Mullingar Community College, where his results secured him the accolade of being the highest achiever in his school. On his return to racing in Formula Ford, Jordan immediately showed impressive form, with several pole positions, lap records and victory in his first British Championship race at Castle Combe in Wiltshire, England.

“What an amazing threesome” said Martin McKenna, President of Motorsport Ireland when told of the finalists. “Whoever gets this year’s award will have won it against the stiffest opposition possible. Good luck to them all”.

The Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year award and the historic Sexton Trophy are presented to the individual who has demonstrated the most potential to represent Ireland at home and internationally both on the track as well as in the public eye. The winner will receive a €50,000 support package to help develop their motor-racing career.

In addition, all three finalists will be included in the Team Ireland development programme run by Motorsport Ireland to nurture and support young drivers.

The current Motorsport Ireland Young Driver of The Year, Cian Carey, competed in Formula 3 in the UK this year and ended his season on a high after he achieved a memorable victory at Oulton Park in Cheshire. In what was his maiden F3 season, the Meath driver also set a new lap record in Donington Park. Cian came back to his home circuit of Mondello Park in September, where he won the prestigious Leinster Trophy. Previous winners of the Leinster Trophy include Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and John Watson.

The overall winner of the 2017 award will be announced at the Beta Irish Motorsport awards ceremony which will take place on Tuesday, December 5th at The Round Room at The Mansion House.  The award is presented annually and is supported by Sport Ireland and Motorsport Ireland.
