Geneva 2018, the last round-up

Catching up on the remainder of the Geneva Motor Show interest, a couple more Hyundais attracted attention, writes Brian Byrne.

The electric Kona (above) is going to be on sale in some European markets this summer, and will have two battery options with rated ranges of 300km/470km respectively. It should spark up the affordable electric car market significantly.

Hyundai also had a sleek and sexy concept, the Le Fil Rouge which suggests the company's future design thinking includes a lot of front end presence.

And the Nexo SUV is not just another crossover, but one powered by hydrogen, a power source which Hyundai has been working with for some years. This is a real production fuel cell car, unlikely to be rolled out in Ireland any time soon, though.

The Jaguar I-Pace in production form is very familiar, as the concept versions we saw at Frankfurt last autumn were pretty well on the button for the eventual real car. Hot on the tailpipes of the E-Pace compact SUV, it is a direct competitor for the Tesla X, without fancy doors. The claimed range will be some 480km. Coming at the end of the year, this promises real practicality as well as punchy performance.

The Lexus LF-1 Limitless is paying a visit to Europe after being revealed at the Detroit Auto Show. As a concept, it shows the Toyota luxury brand contemplating a flagship crossover that further extends the very forward design language of the company. At the other end, there's the new Lexus UX small crossover, targeting the more moneyed version of the C-HR buyers in the parent brand. This one is real.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class debuted too, the fourth generation of the model and an evolved smart-looker that will continue it mission of lowering the average age of a Mercedes-Benz buyer (it has done so quite dramatically since its first iteration). On a new platform, this one is longer and wider than its predecessor and offers better interior accommodation.

Mitsubishi had two cars of interest, the more practical one being a reworking of the Outlander PHEV (which we believe is the best application of the plug-in hybrid system around). It has an updated powertrain, and more refinement in the car's interior. We're not delighted with the front end, but that's a matter of taste.

The e-Evolution Concept is a look forward to a high performance all-electric SUV, and we have no complaints about the style if they can bring anything close to it to production. A stunning interior and a 3-motor electric drivetrain feature.

Nissan's latest Leaf is not new to us any more, as it is launching in a week or so in Ireland. But it's a very important car for the leader of the 'ordinary' electric pack, as there's an awful lot more competition in the space that it created.

Subaru's Viziv Tourer Concept, after the relative blandness of the current Impreza, is a promising style direction if the company rolls it through the next cars it produces. We may see some of it in the next Outback.

The Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept is wild in style and colour and previews what fans are hoping will be a return of a Supra road performance car sometime soon. It's a joint venture with BMW, who will have their own take.

Finally, Volkswagen continues with its ID concept cars theme of recent shows, in this case the Vizzion saloon. It's billed as the future in an all-electric drivetrain with a 640km range, and will be here by 2022. While the ID concepts have also promoted future autonomous cars, the production Vizzion will be driver-drivable.

Until Paris in September, au revoir.

Peugeot's new 508 lion leaps

Peugeot has significantly upped the ante with the new 508 unveiled at Geneva, with a forceful new shape and upgraded interiors, writes Brian Byrne.

The almost-coupe styling and strongly-sculpted front end is a very sporty aesthetic, while practicality is exemplified by the large rear hatch door.

The interior features the i-Cockpit instruments layout already familiar in other recent Peugeot models.

Six petrol and diesel engines will offer outputs from 130-225hp, and a range of driver assistance systems will be part of the offering.

A limited-number First Edition version will be available. Orders will begin in the summer.

Polestar 1 makes public debut

Polestar, the new electric performance brand from Volvo, has debuted in public at the Geneva Motor Show, writes Brian Byrne.

The brand — formerly relating to Volvo performance cars — introduced the Polestar 1 to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The European debut follows its global media reveal in Shanghai, China, in late 2017.

Though over 6,000 expressions of interest have been received for the car, only 500 a year will be built. Pre-orders will open on 13 March

Polestar customers will be able to subscribe to their Polestar car for two or three years in the same way as has been introduced to Volvo cars as an option. One monthly fee includes sundries like insurance and maintenance. Customers will also be able to purchase the Polestar 1 outright if desired.

The Polestar 1 is a petrol hybrid 2+2 GT coupĂ© with 600hp and a 150km of pure electric driving range – the longest of any hybrid car in the world. The petrol engine powers the front wheels, and dual electric motors power the rear.

Volvo also showcased its new V60 mid-sized estate, the V60, built on the same scaleable platform as the XC60 and the 90 series cars. It is available with petrol or diesel engines and the whole palette of Volvo safety technologies.

The V60 won't be available until the latter part of this year.

Beauty from Mazda at Geneva

The Mazda Kai Concept makes its debut in Europe to show a further evolution of Mazda's design on the future, writes Trish Whelan.

And a Vision Coupe concept suggests that if the brand really wants to target the luxury coupe market, it will be well able to. Lots of other people think so too, as it was voted by those at the Press Days as the 2018 Concept Car of the Year from the show.

The Geneva show also saw the world debut of the new Mazda6 Tourer and the European debut of the Mazda6 saloon.

Technology for discussion includes the upcoming Skyactiv X engine, the first petrol engine in the world to use compression ignition.

New generation CR-V for autumn arrival

Honda launched the production version of its all-new CR-V at Geneva today, for the first time the model without a diesel engine, writes Brian Byrne.

Instead, the very popular SUV from the Japanese carmaker will be sold with a 2.0 hybrid option for those who require more fuel efficiency than from the 1.5 petrol engine alone.

The car arrives in European showrooms in the autumn, and there will be 7-seat options.

Honda also showed a sport version of its EV Concept, snazzier than the boxy Urban EV of Frankfurt for which orders will open in early 2019.

Performante drophead is Lambo's sexiest

Lamborghinis are always incredibly sexy motor machines, and this Huracan Performante Spyder is no exception to that rule, writes Trish Whelan.

With a 5.2 V10 under those haunches, the car's claimed sprint potential is 3.1s to 100km/h.

The soft-top roof can be opened at speeds of up to 50km/h, with only a 17-second dalliance at that virtual walking pace for the car.

Renault's vision of shared urban mobility

Renault's Ez-Go is the French carmaker's vision of future urban mobility, writes Trish Whelan.

Designed for car-sharing and in production would be aimed at city life, the concept previews a totally autonomous transport experience in a robo-vehicle that could be used by anyone.

It can be used for a ride alone, or with a group of friends, or with your family, or shared with other users. The core idea is that users, instead of owning a car, will use a service.

New Santa Fe breaks out at Geneva

The new generation Hyundai Santa Fe will get its official launch later this year in Europe, but the car made it to Geneva this week, writes Brian Byrne.

The very strong front end has Kona-type cues and in profile offers significantly more presence.

The new car will feature the familiar 2.2 diesel, and in some markets will be offered with 2.4 and 2.0 petrol engines with 185/232hp outputs respectively.

New plug-in hybrid diesels for C-Class, E-Class

New plug-in hybrid diesel versions of the C-Class and E-Class will go on sale in first European markets in the late summer, writes Brian Byrne.

Shown in pre-production versions at Geneva this week, the third-generation hybrid technology in these models will follow that already in the S-Class 560e which offers CO2 emissions as low as 49g/km.

The new cars will use a 9-speed hybrid transmission 9G-tronic.

A new 'intelligent' home charging wallbox will also be available from the company with the new vehicles.

And two battery-electric models from smart are the first series-produced vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz Cars EQ family. They include the release of a new app to control various functions, and a 22 kW on‑board charger with fast charging function.

Concept M8 Gran Coupe previews 'exotic and alluring' version of new BMW flagship

The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is the highlight of the German carmaker's stand at Geneva today, writes Trish Whelan.

It previews a version of the new flagship of the BMW range, the 8 Series, and the Concept is described as looking ahead to 'the most exotic and alluring' variant of that series.

The Concept sees the BMW Group looking ahead to the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and BMW M8 Gran Coupe, which will be presented during the course of 2019 and round off the BMW 8 Series family.

Skoda's Vision X previews third SUV

Skoda debuted the next stage of its SUV range development with the Vision X at Geneva today, writes Trish Whelan.

The third model in the range will will have options of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electrified versions in its powertrains.

Skoda says the Vision X is a 'concept for the urban crossover of the future', but history shows that the brand's concepts are very close to near-term production models.

The company also showed the premium grade of its Kodiaq, under the Laurin & Klement names used for such variants, as well as an upgraded Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo.
