Novel van idea from Nissan

Just the job for the travelling professional, Nissan has unveiled a concept van that can be turned into a mobile office on site.

nissanvanconcept.jpg

The NV200 vehicle features a load space that is a 'pod' which fits in the main load area when the van is being driven. On site, the pod extends out from that load area, and the now-empty space converts to an office. The driving seat swivels to face the rear and a computer desk folds down from the side.

The concept is configured for an undersea photographer, where the pod holds the gear, including diving equipment and photographic systems in 'wet' and 'dry' areas.

It could be customised for any business where the professional needs to bring equipment on site, and requires a mobile office, such as building surveyors. BB.

Ministers choose Toyota state cars

Green Party ministers John Gormley TD and Eamon Ryan TD have chosen Toyota Prius as their Governmental cars.

Since 2003 more than 1,200 Priuses have been sold in Ireland. The Prius combines an electric motor and a petrol engine.

A Toyota Prius emits 1 tonne less CO2 into the atmosphere than a comparable sized family saloon in a year.

Last week, Green Party TD Trevor Sargent, Minister of State at the Department of Food and Horticulture, took possession of his new ministerial car, a Toyota Prius formerly used by former Galway Mayor Niall O Brolchain. BB.

Special Sunday at Mondello

For the first time ever fans of Irelands premier motor racing series, the Dunlop Supercar Championship, will be treated to three championship encounters in the one event at Mondello Park this Sunday.

The ever popular saloon series will not only race three times in the one day but will also do so with the biggest grid in its history as 17 cars take to the track led by championship leader Rod McGovern. McGovern won two races at the last Mondello Supercar outing and currently leads the series by ten points from Johnny Whelan with David O'Brien and John Farrelly the only other drivers still in contention for the title. The series is bolstered this weekend by entries for returning drivers JJ Riordan and Michael Leonard Jnr.

The unusual nature of the race meeting goes further than the Supercar triple header as it also features the first ever Irish sportscar endurance races. Two forty five minute races are scheduled and entry to these races is limited to open cockpit, closed wheel sportscars. The race format allows for driver changes and re-fuelling with a mandatory pit stop of a minimum length. Each cars pit stop duration will be controlled in order to equalise the performance of cars with one driver to those with two, and those which need to re-fuel to those that don't.

Another new aspect of Sunday's event is that it will feature two historic car classes for the first time at Mondello. The Irish historic racing car class has been expanded to include cars built before 1979 and these cars will compete in separate race from the existing pre 1974 cars. The new class not only admits the younger cars but also allows kit cars, modified saloons and modsports of either vintage to compete.

The nine race programme is completed by the traditional Formula Libre double header and gets underway with the first of the endurance races at 11:10 on Sunday morning. (Mondello Park Media Service)

White lines make roads safer

White lines are more effective at reducing road crashes than speed cameras, saving up to eight times as many lives, according to new research from the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP).

Ireland is on the cusp of a massive increase in the deployment of speed cameras, which typically lead to a 10 percent fall in head-on incidents, side impacts at junctions, collisions with trees and lampposts and accidents involving cyclists or pedestrians hit by cars.

But the EuroRAP research suggests that dedicated lanes for turning right or left cut side impacts by up to 80 percent. Anti-skid surfaces can lead to a 65 percent improvement, while new signs can reduce crashes by up to 40 percent and renewing road markings cuts them by up to 35 percent. BB.
