Lexus's premium compact hybrid breaks cover

This is the Lexus CT 200h and it will break new segment ground for the Toyota owned luxury brand when it goes into production in the autumn.

It's the first full hybrid in the premium compact segment and will be powered by a 1.8 four cylinder engine with electric motor in the familiar Lexus Hybrid Drive format.

The brand will be hyping the fact that Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions will be significantly lower than equivalent diesels, a powertrain more popular in Europe's premium car market. 'Class leading' CO2 emissions are claimed.

The CT 200h will debut next week at Geneva. It has visiual links to the LF-Ch concept shown at Frankfurt last autumn.

Summer arrival for RS5

The 450hp RS version of the Audi A5 coupe which we told you about last week will go on sale in Ireland in the summer.

Price is expected to be around €100,000.

The powertrain is based on the 4.2 V8 which will get that power to the road through a 7-speed S Tronic dual clutch gearbox. It will, of course, have Audi's quattro AWD system, this time with a newly-developed centre differential.

The 0-100km/h sprint is claimed at less than five seconds.

RSA at Mondello this weekend

This Saturday and Sunday Mondello Park will be the venue for the first ever Rallysport Association (RSA) Rallysprint in the Republic of Ireland which will also be the inaugural inter-provincial rally competition.

The Rallysport Association was set up by Alan Hyde to provide a viable, alternative and affordable form of motorsport to Rally competitors and this year celebrates its tenth anniversary. The RSA has been providing their brand of Rallysprint competition to Northern Irish competitors at a variety of venues since 2000 and now bring their popular event format to Kildare for the first time.

The format for the first ever RSA even at Mondello Park will see two separate competitions run with an overall winner being declared on both Saturday and Sunday. Competitors will compete as individuals but with the added twist that the top ten on each day will score points for their province with the aim of being crowned the first Irish Interprovincial Rallysprint Champions.

The Sprint will use two different ‘Stages’ with the full International track, including the addition of chicanes, being used in both directions. Each stage will be run over two laps of the track with a minimum of six runs being undertaken on each day. The event format coupled with the value for money entry fee has attracted a huge number of drivers with more than 170 cars entered for each day.

The opening stage will run from 10:30 on Saturday morning and the circuit will remain live until 17:00 with no lunch break. A minimum of six stages, and more if possible, will be run off within that time and with up to twenty cars on track at a go the circuit will be extremely busy throughout. Admission will be €15 each day for adults, children under 16 will be admitted free.

Upgrades to Fabia, Roomster

Skoda will show off facelifted versions of its Fabia supermini and Roomster small MPV at Geneva next week.

There's more to the reveal that just cosmetic tweaking, though, as the cars get a whole new range of engines already installed in other brands through the VW Group. They include the 1.2 TSI petrols and the 1.6 diesels which were rolled out in the new generation Polo.

The changes follow the facelift of the Octavia in the latter part of last year.

The BubbleBum closes safety issue

Derry mum of two, Grainne Kelly, found that four out of ten primary school children in the North are transported to and from school without a booster seat.

That prompted her to come up with the BubbleBum, the world’s first inflatable, safety approved and regulated car booster seat. It offers a lightweight and highly portable solution for parents and adults who transport children in their cars and, in doing so, it also plugs the safety gap caused by the legislative exemptions which exist across the EU.

“I just wanted to create a product that I could send everywhere with my children to keep them safe in the event of unexpected journeys,” she says.

“Modern families do a lot of travelling in cars, coaches and taxis, both here and abroad - bulky booster seats just aren't practical to carry around even for one child, never mind if you have two or three.

“And frequently when you arrive at car hire desks to collect your car, having also ordered booster seats, you get told that they aren’t available! That means it is you, the driver, that is committing an offence if you then drive the car without the necessary child protection!”

Grainne is determined to raise public awareness of child car safety. In doing so she hopes that Governments across the EU will review and update what she describes as 'dated legislation' which permits children to travel unprotected without an appropriate booster seat for ‘unexpected’ journeys.

Suzuki recall Alto/Nissan Pixo

The manufacturer of Nissan's Pixo and Suzuki's Alto, Maruti Suzuki in India, has recalled 100,000 of the cars to fix a potential fuel filler problem.

Some of the cars are those exported to Europe, according to reports in Automotive News Europe.

The problem, which was fixed in cars built after August 22 last year, involves possible fuel leaks after the car's tank was filled above a certain level.

Suzuki Ireland says its dealers have been notified of the recall and they are dealing with any affected customers.

No accidents have been reported over the problem, which was discovered during internal testing at the factory.

EMI causing car problems?

There's a lot of talk around that electromagnetic interference can be causing issues with the electronics of cars, causing problems like unintended acceleration.

It is generally denied by carmakers, who say their electronics are sufficiently shielded against EMI. But the suggestions persist, even into courtrooms.

This article in USA Today is a good resume of the situation.

New Magentis coming

This is the next Kia Magentis in designer sketch form. The real car will be revealed at the New York Auto Show in April.

One in 50 own up to parking accidents

While two out of every three car owners in a recent AA Ireland survey said they had suffered damage to their cars in a supermarket car park, in only one out of every 50 cases were they notofied by the person who had caused the damage.

According to the AA's insurance wing, hitting or being hit by another vehicle is by far the most common car-park claim, followed by ‘door to panel’ collisions with walls, pillars, trolley shelters or barriers. This can occur due to limited space between cars or reversing into tight spaces with often poor visibility. There are also regular claims for damage from rogue shopping trolleys.

Common light collision damage includes headlight damage, and dents to bumpers, wings and doors.

The cost of the damage can reach up to €1,000 depending on the speed the vehicle was traveling at, the extent of the damage, and whether or not the panel needs replacing. Garages report an average cost of €250 plus VAT for bumper buffs, €350 plus VAT for door dents etc (one panel only), €300 plus VAT for quarter panel dents and €50 plus VAT for mirror covers or complete €150 plus mirror.

The AA notes that 'getting away with it' is no longer so easy, because many car parks now have cctv surveillance, and passers-by can also photograph such incidents.

M-B to show upper medium concept

Mercedes-Benz has revealed details of a plug-in hybrid concept which will be shown at Geneva next week.

Among the features are a segmented translucent roof, LED headlights, and rear pivot-and-slide doors.

Body scanning at Italian airports

A full-body scanner is being put into operation today at both Rome's Fiumicino and Milan's Malpensa airports.

If the pilot scheme shows that the scanners speed up airport security, there are plans to deploy 15 of them at Italian airports serving transatlantic flights.

The scanners are already in use at many US airports, and some others in Europe on test regimes.

Porsche loses Cayenne pic

Porsche accidentally released a picture of its new generation Cayenne on a website last week, in a pic of its overall range.

The blooper was fixed quick, but not before a screenshot was taken which is now in the wild.

The new car was supposed to be officially unveiled at Geneva next week.

The shot shows some major redesign to the nose area, and to the rear quarter.

The expectation is a 3.0 V6 diesel will be the most popular powertrain in Europe.

Fiat is to put a 2-cylinder engine in the 500 this summer.

The 900cc unit uses the company's TwinAir fuel saving technology and will output 85hp.

It will produce less than 100g/km.

Fiat used 2-cylinder engines in the 1936 Topolino, the 1957 500, and the 1991 Cinquecento.
