From Melbourne to St Petersburg in a Touareg
Long distance driving veteran Rainer Zietlow and his team have set off on a new record-breaking trip: the long-distance adventurer is aiming to do 23,000 kms from Melbourne to St Petersburg in Russia in a Touareg powered by the standard engine.
He plans to cover the route from the earth's southernmost city of over a million inhabitants to its northernmost counterpart in less than three weeks.
The all-terrain Volkswagen Touareg is armed with some additional equipment, such as a roll-cage and an extra fuel tank. During the journey, the team will cross many climatic and vegetation zones and have to withstand extreme heat, torrential rain, sandstorms and differences in altitude, so the Touareg is set to prove its qualities and durability in all the challenging conditions along the way.

From today, all Audi A6 S Line models will retail from €46,100 on the road, offering Audi customers a saving of €4,494.
The seventh generation of the Audi A6 was launched in April last year. Sales have increased by 72 percent compared to the same period last year.

TomTom is today launching its Hands Free Car Kit for smartphones.
The new Car Kit features an advanced noise and echo cancellation system which reduces background noise for the caller and removes ambient noise for the driver.
New mounting options make smartphone use on the move safer and more convenient. The newly designed Car Kit comes with an adjustable grip to fit any smartphone with or without its cover. An extendable microphone can be clipped to the sun visor to ensure conversations are louder and clearer.

Cannes in a Van film competition
Cannes in a Van, the four-wheeled champion of independent filmmaking has announced the call for entries from throughout Europe to its Van d'Or Film Awards 2012, powered by Ford. It is open to all independent film makers, and there will be a new student category.
The awards will take place in September and submissions for the 15 categories can be made until August 31, including for the first time a special Ford 'Student Film in Transit Award' for full-time film students who have developed a submission, with a prize worth over £1k of film-making equipment. The Awards will be judged by a prestigious panel of experts from the independent film world, incuding Oscar-nominees, seminal directors and inspiring industry key players. No seatbelt, no excuse!
In the first six months of 2012, some 23 percent of drivers killed and 29 percent of passengers killed were not wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, according to new figures released by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).
The RSA say a worrying feature is the number of people who were not wearing a seat belt and who were ejected from the vehicle. Some of these deaths may well have been prevented if the driver or passenger had been wearing their seat belt as it significantly increases your chance of survival and can also reduce the severity of your injuries if involved in a collision.
"If you don't wear a seat belt, you become a potential killer in a crash. You'll be thrown around the inside of a car, possibly seriously injuring, or killing, other occupants in the car."
By not wearing a seatbelt you are not just risking your life and that of others, you are breaking the law. If you don't, you risk a fine of €80 and two penalty points, which remain on your licence for three years. Passengers over 17 can be fined €80 for not wearing a seat belt.

Merc E300 Hybrid: World's 'most economical' luxury hybrid
Within weeks, Mercedes-Benz will introduce their new diesel-powered E 300 BlueTec Hybrid on the Irish market, writes Trish Whelan.
Mercedes-Benz believe the E300 'heralds the beginning of a new era in hybrid drive systems'.
They say this is the world's most economical, luxury-class model, delivering fuel consumption of a frugal 4.2 L/100kms, (almost 70 mpg), and has low emissions of only 109g C02/km so will be in Band A for annual road tax (€160).
It will be available in saloon and estate.
It combines the power of a 2.2 four-cylinder diesel engine developing 204bhp with the energy of a 20 kW electric motor. Powered and charged by its own motion, without need of any external charging points, and unrestricted in terms of driving distance, the E300 Hybrid is a self-contained unit that links the fuel economy of a diesel engine over long distances with the advantages of an efficient hybrid in city and stop/go traffic.
Positioned between the internal combustion engine and the 7-speed automatic transmission, the lithium-ion battery powered electric motor gives a boost effect to the diesel engine when accelerating whilst increasing braking energy when in alternator mode. The car can also be driven under electric power alone.
The E300 Hybrid is based on the E250CDI, which has a price tag of €47,500. It's expected to launch here at a price slightly above this figure with annual road tax of €160 (Band A).
Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars says this small price difference will be more than offset by increased fuel economy and the savings in fuel costs that owners will make over a short ownership period.
Supplies will arrive in volume early next year.

Triple and double wins for Cruzes in Brazil
Another WTCC weekend turned into a triumph for Chevrolet, as Yvan Muller and Rob Huff shared victories at Curitiba in Brazil.
Yvan Muller, Alain Menu and Rob Huff (pictured) signed off the sixth triple win of the year in Race 1, while Huff and Menu made it a 1-2 in Race 2, with Muller finishing 4th.
This means that 13 races out of the 16 held so far have been won by the blue Cruze cars.
Gabriele Tarquini had tjavascript:void(0)o settle in fourth position after he tried in vain to disrupt the Chevrolet trio at the start. The Italian ace was close to performing a miracle in the second race, leading for a few laps, but eventually he had to surrender, losing also second place to Menu. But at least he claimed a well deserved third position ahead of Muller.
This means that 13 races out of the 16 held so far have been won by the blue Cruze cars.
Chevrolet leads the Manufacturers' Championship by 243 points, just one step away from a third consecutive world title, while behind them BMW and SEAT are split by five points only. The Drivers' crown has been thrown wide open with a mere 27 points separating the three Chevvy drivers.
The championship now takes a long summer break, while cars and parts are being shipped to the USA where Rounds 17 and 18 will take place at Sonoma in California on September 23 - the first ever series race in the United States.

Over 10m cars on UK roads have 'hidden history'
People who buy cars in the UK for import into Ireland should be careful that they have access to the car's full history as a recent survey in Britain shows that over 10.4 million cars on the UK's roads have a 'hidden history'.
The survey is by HPI, vehicle information experts. They say this claim follows news from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders claim there has been a 9 percent increase in cars in the UK to 31,362,716. With 1 in 3 cars hitting HPI's 'at risk' registers, the SMMT figures suggest that the nearly-new and secondhand car market is a minefield for buyers.
Outstanding finance remains a very real threat when buying a used car as many don't realise that the debt stays with the vehicle. This could mean there may be up to 7.8 million cars that are still on finance on UK roads.
Over 6.2 million cars on the UK's roads could have had a plate change. It could be innocently done, but fraudsters can use a change of plates to hide the identify of a stolen car or an insurance write-off. HPI also say that 5 in 100 cars checked by them have a mileage discrepancy. Dodgy sellers use clocking as an easy way to increase the price of their vehicle.
Four in every 100 cars that HPI check have been declared an insurance write-off. They say buyers need to beware of shiny paintwork hiding a dangerous level of damage or inadequate repairs, making the car unfit to be on the road.
If you are looking at buying a vehicle in the UK to import back here, it makes sense to have it checked out before you part with your money to avoid buying a nightmare on wheels.

The views of the public and other road safety stakeholders are currently being reviewed and considered for inclusion in the next Road Safety Strategy.
The new strategy, due to be published in December, will cover the period 2013 to 2020 and will replace the current strategy which expires at the end of this year. Anyone wishing to see details of the consultation process, plus an online facility for making submissions, log on to www.rsa.ie

Chevrolet to partner Liverpool FC
Chevrolet is entering into a four-year agreement with Liverpool Football Club to become its Official Automotive Partner.
The partnership runs to the end of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League and European campaigns, and includes visibility for the brand at Anfield, Liverpool's home ground; editorial opportunities within the Club's print and digital publications and fan sites; and player appearances for commercial opportunities.
Chevrolet is also an official sponsor for the Club's Pre Season North American Tour which has already seen Liverpool play Toronto FC last Saturday. The partnership runs to the end of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League and European campaigns, and includes visibility for the brand at Anfield, Liverpool's home ground; editorial opportunities within the Club's print and digital publications and fan sites; and player appearances for commercial opportunities.
Chevrolet is also an official sponsor for the Club's Pre Season North American Tour which has already seen Liverpool play Toronto FC last Saturday. Liverpool will play Italian giants, AS Roma tomorrow at Fenway Park in Boston, and on 28 July will play English Premier League rivals, Tottenham Hotspur in Baltimore.

All-new Kia Carens for Paris Show
Kia's all-new Carens compact MPV will make its world premier at the Paris Motor Show on September 27, writes Trish Whelan.
With a completely fresh, sleek, cab-forward design, lower roofline, longer wheelbase, larger wheels (up to 18-inch) and chrome beltline accent, the new Carens has been conceived around the theme 'dynamic space'.
It will combine sporty looks with spacious functionality and an emotional appeal that is becoming a regular feature of Kia products.
The car is expected to go on sale in Ireland in February or March of next year.

New Mazda6 for Moscow debut
This is Mazda's new 6, which will debut at the Moscow Motor Show on August 29.
The new Mazda6 is the second of Mazda's new generation of products which incorporate both the full range of Skyactiv technologies and the new Kodo - Soul of Motion design language. It will also be the first model equipped with Mazda's brake energy regeneration system, i-Eloop.
The new car was concepted as the Takeri, and this is the Russian specification model.
Russia is a key market for Mazda.

Toyota production passes 200m units
Toyota Motor Corporation's worldwide cumulative vehicle production has surpassed 200 million units.
This milestone took 76 years and 11 months to reach, and began with production of the Model G1 truck in August 1935.
The total number of vehicles produced since 1992 at Toyota's manufacturing facilities in Europe, including those in the Czech Republic, France, Portugal, Russia, Turkey and the United Kingdom, reached 7.44 million units at the end of 2011.
The most-produced model among Toyota-brand vehicles is the Corolla (pictured), of which the 11th generation was launched in Japan in May. Over 39.08 million Corollas were produced worldwide as of the end of June.

A Facebook page operated by the Delhi traffic police in India has helped to prosecute more than 22,000 traffic offenders in the last two years.
Citizens upload pictures of traffic violations ranging from unauthorised parking to riding two-wheel vehicles without helmets.

The devices are normally used to shoot video on fast leisure sports like skiiing or mountain biking. But now they're being used by commuter cyclists like the flight recorder 'black boxes' on aircraft, which provide information in the time leading up to an incident.
The cameras have also been credited with warding off confrontation, when aggressive motorists hurl insults and worse after a bicycle-car incident.
Cyclists have also admitted that their own behaviour has been modified, because they know their own reactions in such a situation are being recorded.

According to Chief Operating Officer Carlos Tavares the company would initially offer upscale variants of existing models, as Citroen has done with its DS series. Renault's sub-brand would be named Initiale.
In a second phase, unique models would be produced under the Initiale brand. Tavares was speaking in in interview with Automotive News Europe.
Renault's last foray into the premium market, with the Vel Satis from 2002-2009, was a failure.

Scarlet fever at Silverstone Classic
A world record 60 Ferrari F40s took to the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit during today's Silverstone Classic powered by the AA event to mark the Italian supercar's 25th birthday.
The phalanx of scarlet red F40s led to a glittering parade of marques, models and car clubs celebrating special milestones in the sun on Sunday at the world's biggest classic motor racing festival.
The F40 was the world's first 200mph road car when it appeared in 1987 and is still rated by many to be the finest supercar in history. It was also the legendary Enzo Ferrari's 'supercar swansong' before his death in 1988.
In total, more than 400 rare and exotic cars joined in today's parade, notably iconic British sportscars such as TVRs, Lotus Elans, Triumph Spitfires, Austin Healeys and MGBs - 2012 is the MGB's golden anniversary year - plus Lamborghini and Mercedes-Benz car club members.

Toyota Motor Europe and PSA Peugeot Citroen have announced a new agreement on light commercial vehicles for the European market, writes Trish Whelan.
Under the plan, PSA Peugeot Citroen is to supply Toyota with light commercial vehicles for sale in Europe, under the Toyota brand.
Ian Corbett, Marketing Operations Manager, Toyota Ireland says they will begin to see the first of these vehicles in Q2 of 2013.
PSA Peugeot Citroen will supply Medium Size Vans derived from its existing vehicles Peugeot Expert and Citroen Jumpy. The agreement also includes collaboration on next generation vehicles which are to be produced by PSA Peugeot Citroen which is expected to last beyond 2020.
Toyota is to participate in the development and industrial investment costs for the next generation product. Toyota Motor Europe President and Didier Leroy said 'by joining forces with PSA Peugeot Citroen, we have found a good solution for our customers following the recent discontinuation of our own Hiace model'.
Toyota already enjoy a joint-venture partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroen in the small car segment.

Simply stunning is the best way to describe the new generation Volkswagen CC, writes Trish Whelan.
I love how it looks, both inside and out. It also scores high on performance.
The engine range here includes a powerful and efficient 2.0 TDI diesel with 140 or 170hp common rail diesels, both in Tax Band B, and all derivatives have Blue Motion Technologies as standard. There is also the option of a DSG automatic at just north of €41,000 and a 4WD version for a bit more. There are no petrol options.
The test car is the CC Sport 140hp model, in Band B of €225 per annum for tax purposes.
This sexy stunner is built on the same platform as the VW Passat, but that car never looked this good.

Skoda partners Dogs Trust
Skoda is partnering with Dogs Trust, becoming the official vehicle supplier to Dogs Trust Ireland supplying the Trust with two Skoda Roomsters this year to complement their current fleet of Skoda vehicles, writes Trish Whelan.
The two customized Skoda Roomsters will help transport dogs to and from the Rehoming Centre. The Roomster was selected for the Dogs Trust partnership because of its spaciousness and functionality.
In addition, Skoda dealerships nationwide will be collecting funds and raising awareness about the Dogs Trust partnership.
As Ireland's largest dog welfare charity, the core function of Dogs Trust is to reduce the number of stray dogs that are destroyed in Irish pounds each year and to educate the public about canine care. Since opening its state-of-the-art rehoming centre in Finglas, Dublin in 2009, the team of staff have helped over 2,500 stray and abandoned dogs get back on their paws and into loving homes.

Increase in Irish people flying SAS to Scandinavia
Scandinavian Airlines report an increase in passenger numbers on all their Irish routes to Stockholm and Copenhagen for the first half of this year.
Figures from January - June this year show a 12 percent increase on its Dublin to Stockholm route, a 5 percent increase on its Dublin to Copenhagen route and a 2 percent increase on its Dublin to Oslo route.
Scandinavian Airlines Country Manager Ireland, Alan Sparling, says we now look on Scandinavia as a good value-for-money destination.
SAS is Europe's most punctual airline and Sparling says the increase in traffic numbers 'clearly shows that if you have a punctual, flexible and business orientated timetable, you will see a steady growth in passenger numbers'.

Here is the new European Honda CR-V due to be launched in October in the UK. We're not sure when it will launch here in Ireland and will keep you posted.
Since it was first introduced in 1995, over five million CR-Vs have been sold across the world. This fourth generation has been comprehensively redesigned for the European market.
For the first time, the CR-V will be offered with a choice of both two- and four-wheel drive on the 2.0 i-VTEC model, while improvements to the petrol and 2.2 i-DTEC diesel engines have achieved a significant reduction in C02 emissions.
The new model has a more assertive and aerodynamic stance with a bolder nose section. The car is lower in height, without compromising on interior space; but has increased luggage space. The boot can now take two mountain bikes or four sets of golf clubs. The addition of a keyless entry system and power tailgate make it easier for owners to use the boot space; this power tailgate is unique to the European market.
The new CR-V will be built at Honda's production plant in Swindon, in the UK.

Prices start at €40,395 for the 2.0TDI 143 version which represents a drop in the previous entry price.
The engine range has been updated and is now 15 percent more efficient than its predecessor.
Redesigned inside and out, the car is now more attractive and sporty than before.
The 2.0TDI 143 emits 139g/km and now qualifies for tax band B. The 2.0TDI 177hp (with S tronic and quattro drive) delivers 47.1mpg on the combined cycle. There's also a 3.0TDI outputting 245bhp and with 580Nm of torque. This V6 diesel has been completely redesigned and now combines the potential for up to 44.1mpg with extra torque over its predecessor.
Transmissions include a manual six-speed as standard. The seven speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission is standard for the 3.0TDI quattro and optional for the 2.0TDI quattro.
The new S Q5 TDI is the brand's first diesel powered S model and is priced at €72,700. It launches here early next year.

Survey shows women prefer ferry travel
It seems that women are favouring travel by ferry in ever increasing numbers.
This is revealed in a recent survey of passenger opinion carried out by Irish Ferries on their services to Britain and France.
A majority of female passengers surveyed said they would prefer to travel by sea - up from 42 percent to 57 percent since the research was last conducted three years ago.
Frustrated with tight controls on baggage and other restrictions imposed on air travellers, women now prefer the 'take as much as you want' freedom of ferry travel.
The introduction of the Beauty Salon onboard the Oscar Wilde cruise ferry to France combined with Club Class lounges with priority boarding on services to Britain with reserved seating and complimentary refreshments were quoted as major reasons. Mall style onboard shopping, free Wi-Fi, children's play zones and the avoidance of invasive security screening were also given as reasons to go by sea.

Customers will have the option of either the 100 PS or the 125 PS versions of the 1.0 EcoBoost which was recently named the 2012 'International Engine of the Year'.
The C-MAX 1.0 EcoBoost is expected to deliver 5.1 L/100km (55.4mpg) and 117 g/km C02 across both power outputs, while the Grand C-MAX should achieve 5.2 L/100km (54.3 mpg) and 119 g/km C02.
The three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine uses turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust to deliver the power of a larger engine with the fuel efficiency of a smaller unit.

Figures for the sector recently released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that Ford had sales of 1,647 vehicles up to the end of June. This compares with 1,475 for VW and 885 for Renault.
The overall CV market for the six month period to the end of June 2012 totalled 7,789 units, down 382 units, or 4.6 percent, from a total of 8,171 sales for the same period last year. With a 21.1 percent share of the 2012 sales, Ford managed to grow its share of the market up from 19.7 percent in 2011.
The backbone of their success in the CV sector continues to be the Transit which has been Ireland's number one van from when it arrived in Ireland nearly 50 years ago. Transit topped the charts in its segment with sales of 928 units so far this year, followed by Renault Traffic Master range with 640 units, and VW Transporter / Crafter range with 438. The all new Transit Custom model will be launched here in October.

James Bond rides a Honda motorcycle in Skyfall
Today, we bring you a two-wheel story as Honda's CRF250R motorcycle was the machine of choice for the 007 film's action vehicles and stunt crew teams. These motorbikes were modified for the opening sequence of this, the 23rd James Bond film which was shot in Istanbul and Adana, Turkey earlier this year.
Twenty CRF250R machines were provided in total by Honda UK, to be adapted and 'dressed' appropriately into two native style motorbikes. One is a Turkish police bike that henchman, Patrice (Ola Rapace), seizes after a policeman crashes; the other is a Turkish merchant's bike that James Bond (Daniel Craig) uses to pursue Patrice through the streets. Both bikes feature extensive modifications courtesy of Chris Corbould's award-winning Special Effects team.

This is the largest exhibition of its kind, celebrating 50 years of the James Bond films and showcases 50 of the best-loved and most iconic Bond vehicles.

French Embassy welcomes Renault Kangoo Z.E.
The French Embassy in Dublin has taken delivery of its new 100 percent electric vehicle, the Renault Kangoo. Z.E.
The embassy purchased the electric commercial vehicle from Renault Belgard. It will be used on a daily basis for a range of activites including the transport of visiting guests from France.

Toyota extends relationship with Paul O'Connell
Toyota Ireland is extending their relationship with Munster and Ireland rugby hero Paul O'Connell into 2015.
The 85 times capped international, who has opted for the new generation Land Cruiser as his car of choice, has been a Toyota brand ambassador since 2010.

Skoda achieves record market share
Skoda Ireland has seen a steady increase in its share of the Irish car market achieving a record 6.2 percent in 2012 with a stated goal to become a Top 5 best-selling car brand by 2016, writes Trish Whelan.
Despite a market decline of the new vehicle market of 13.5 percent, Skoda Ireland turnover is only down 1.5 percent on year to €49.6m
Parts & Accessories turnover recorded a 14 percent increase to €2.63m in comparison to 2011.
Registrations are up 4.5 percent for the period with the Octavia the stand out performer within the Skoda range with a sales increase of 10 percent during the first six months of this year.
Skoda Ireland has just launched their small car, Citigo, retailing from €9,995, which is available for test drive at Skoda dealerships nationwide. It is available in 3- and 5-door models with two petrol engine otions including 1.0 60bhp and 75bhp power units with fuel economy from 4.5 L/100km. With emissions of just 105g/km, the Citigo is in Band A for VRT and Road Tax.

Seat reveals new generation Leon
Seat has released full details of its new Leon hatchback, which will debut at the Paris Motor Show in September, writes Brian Byrne.
Though shorter than the current version, the new generation has a longer wheelbase and offers a more spacious interior.
The most significant power unit will be the 1.6 diesel, with CO2 emissions of 99g/km and fuel consumption equivalent to 74mpg. Other engines include 1.2 and 1.4 petrol units and a 2.0 diesel.
The car features the option of full LED headlamps, which the company claims as a first in class.

Duster to lead in Dacia here
The Dacia Duster small SUV goes on sale in Ireland in January at a starting price of €14,990, writes Brian Byrne.
The Romanian-built car will lead the arrival of the Renault-owned budget brand's models here, which will include the Sandero hatchback and the Grand Sandero.
All three are built on the Renault-Nissan platform used also by the Nissan Juke and the NV200 Van.
Power for the version in Ireland, which will be offered in both 2WD and 4WD formats, will be a 110hp 1.5 diesel with Band B rating for CO2.

US moots mandatory reversing cameras
Road safety bosses in the US are looking at making mandatory the provision of backup cameras in all new passenger vehicles, writes Brian Byrne.
It's understood that the Highway Traffic Safety Administration will make its decision on the proposal by the end of this year.
If as expected it is a 'yes' decision, it could make for much less expensive interactive sat-nav system options, as the core screen will be an integral part of every car by law.
The regulation will be aimed at cutting the number of accidents involving children and reversing out of driveways.
Such cameras are already standard equipment in many grades of even compact cars in Europe, but are not required by any regulation.
Other road safety laws put in place in the US included mandatory ESP, which was followed by a similar European rule, and tire pressure monitoring systems.

Opel Ireland has delivered 100 units of its new Astra-based van to Eircom, which brings the communications company's Opel fleet to 650.
The van is based on the 5-door Astra hatch, and the Eircom vehicles are to be used by the company's engineering frontline managers.
The new Astra Hatch Van is priced from €16,530 plus VAT. There are two trim options, and power can be from either 1.3 or 1.7 diesels. Features include a steel mesh bulkhead as standard as well as load lashing eyes.

First View: Chevrolet Cruze SW
"
Whenever I drive in Germany I'm struck by the number of wagons on the roads, writes Brian Byrne. It's possibly linked to their love of the outdoor lifestyle, which requires lots of stuff to be carted around, but estate versions of every car model that offers them are abundant.
Compare and contrast with Ireland, where the estate is a quite small proportion of the car variants sold, anywhere between six and nine percent, depending on brand and model. Premium makers tend to have a higher percentage of estate buyers.
But maybe there's a hint of a change. The wagon versions of mainstream family compacts like the Hyundai i30 and Kia's cee'd are all selling above average against the standard hatches. Partly, I suspect, because they look more like slightly longer hatchbacks than the vanny traditional estates which used to be offered in the genre. In other words, sportier, not like the favoured vehicle of yore of what used to be called a commercial traveller.
Such thoughts were prompted over the last few days at the international press launch of the Chevrolet Cruze SW. It won't be available in Ireland until sometime towards the end of the year, but it could also help to reshape the Irish perception of the estate car.
Chevrolet is only beginning to get moving here again after a few years of hiatus when the Irish importer disengaged and a new arrangement was made with the UK-based Chevrolet subsidiary of GM Europe. Ten dealers have been appointed, six more applications are being evaluated, and plans are progressing to give the Chevrolet brand a good push for the 2013 market.
My experience with the Cruze SW has been my first extended run with a Chevrolet product since the new arrangement was finalised a couple of months back. I wasn't surprised to find it an encouraging one.
We haven't had the Cruze here until now. It’s very similar to its cousin Opel Astra and is a very successful compact model in the US and Australia, and showing promise in European markets where the Chevrolet brand is one of the few on a growth run (the others being Hyundai and Kia, coincidentally also from Korea where most of the Chevrolet products sold here are built).
The connections with Opel models are clearly visible in the interior, such as the sat-nav and other instrumentation. The SWs I drove over the last couple of days were well trimmed, with close-woven fabric on sections of the dashboard providing a nice textured lift to the plastic.
The estate elements add more cargo space and flexibility, which I'll explore further when the car actually goes on sale in Ireland. Suffice to say for now that there’s some 1,478 litres of cargo capacity with the rear seatbacks folded.
I had the chance to try two powertrains, a 163hp 2.0 diesel, and the 140hp 1.7 diesel which will be the mainstay motor in the Irish market. Both seem very good, but I preferred the smaller one even though it did require more gearshifting to keep it at the top of its game in the scenic and twisting hilly roads above the Rhine. The 6-speed gearbox managing both was pleasant and crisp.
I was expecting the car to handle well, and I wasn’t disappointed. In this configuration, it isn’t ever going to be called on to perform like its WTCC namesakes, but the composed attitude on the launch routes suggested the possibilities of a little fun where safely doable.
On the highway at the speeds permitted in Germany the Cruze SW is a steady and competent vehicle well able to keep up with the powerful travellers in the faster lanes.
It isn’t a great time to be selling cars in Ireland, and it’s an even more difficult one to be relaunching a brand virtually from standstill. But the Cruze in its various forms is certainly a valid proposition in the key compact family market. The segment is competitive, but so is the car.
This will be worth watching.

New baby Opel details released
Opel has revealed further details of its new city car, the Adam, which will debut at the Paris Motor Show in September and arrives in showrooms in January of 2013.
Named after the founder of the Opel brand, Adam Opel, the car is a 4-seat 3.7 metres contender in a segment that is very small in Ireland but is a big seller on mainland European markets.
Power will be provided initially by 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engines, but a brand new small displacement turbocharged engine will come along later.
Carmakers showcase EVs at Dublin summit
The Volkswagen Golf electric car due to go on sale in Ireland at the end of next year was one of the products from eight carmakers on show at the Fully Charged 2102 Electric Vehicle Summit held in Dublin today, writes Brian Byrne.
The other makers included Nissan, Renault, Toyota, Opel, Mitusbishi, Tesla, and Volvo, a representation which Government minister Pat Rabbitte said was a 'testament to the transformation underway in the industry'.
Also at the summit were five Irish companies showcasing electric vehicles products and services that have been trialled in Ireland in conjunction with ESB ecars.
Among them was Dublin-based M2C, which has developed a smart home charge point that operates as part of a home energy management system and allows the end user to charge when electricity is at its cheapest or greenest.
Wicklow company JTM have developed one of the first mobile chargers for electric vehicles for use with rescue fleets. Eveo solutions presented their public charger, the first of which was recently installed at the Topaz service station in Dublin Port.
The conference also heard that Ireland is to be the first country to test a system that will manage an EV owner's charging while travelling in other countries on a 'roaming' basis.
Delegations of specialists in electrical transportion attended from the US, Japan, France, Germany, Turkey, Norway, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Italy and Latvia.

Jennings dominates Sean Conlon Rally
Fermanagh’s Garry Jennings (Impreza GpA) emerged as winner 18 seconds ahead of Vincent Mc Aree(Evo9) in last weekend's Valvoline Forest rally Championship Round 5 in Mitchelstown, writes Austin Shinnors.
Formally known as the Sean Conlon Memorial rally, it was hosted as usual by the Tipperary MC. Reigning champion Owen Murphy (Evo9) was third just 2 seconds behind Mc Aree, and the 2010 champion Pat O’Connell (Evo9) emerged fourth after a delay on the last stage. The 2WD segment was captured by Shay Power (Escort Mk2) and Dean Raftery (Civic) won the junior class.

Donegal hotel electrifies for EV customers
Harveys Point Hotel Donegal has installed a charging point for electric cars which is free to guests.
The picture shows hotelier Deirdre McGlone and customer relations manager Noel Cunningham with the e-charger.
The hotel prides itself on being at the cusp of using technology for the benefit of its customers. It also became first hotel in Ireland to develop a comprehensive travel App for smartphones. and has ultimately shown vision and initiative to recognise the massive marketing potential in the rapid global growth of iPhone users.

Cruze wagon at end of year
The Chevrolet Cruze station wagon will arrive in Ireland towards the end of the year, offering another option to a revived dealership network for the brand in Ireland, writes Brian Byrne.
Power will be a new 1.7 diesel with 130hp output and pulling 300Nm of torque, and in Band A for Irish tax purposes.
With the rear seats down, the cargo capacity of the Cruze SW is up to 1,478 litres.
The car is currentlt on its international press launch programme in Cologne, Germany.
Chevrolet in Ireland was formerly a franchise held by the Nissan importers here, but is now directly under the control of Chevrolet UK & Ireland, a wholly owned subsidiary of GM Europe.

Peugeot launches 208 in Ireland
Peugeot Ireland has launched the new 208 small car, at a starting price of €14,495 for the 1.0 petrol version, writes Brian Byrne. The 1.4 diesel starts at €17,095.
A 1.2 petrol will also be available from the end of August and pricing for that will be released closer to its arrival.
The car will be available in 3- and 5-door formats, and with three levels of specification, Access, Active and Allure.
A full-size spare wheel, and cruise/limiter speed control are standard at the entry level, while among the extra features in the Active and above is Bluetooth phone linking.
Peugeot Ireland's sales and marketing director Des Cannon said at today's launch that the segment has become much more competitive, with no less than 27 different models now available. The segment represents a fifth of car sales in the Irish market.
The new car is smaller outside than the 207 which it replaces, but improved packaging means there's more room inside for passengers and their luggage.
In a segment that's very price sensitive, the Irish distributor reckons 60 percent of sales are at the Level One equivalent.
The target market is the second car and female sectors, which the two generations previous 206 attracted as a strong buyer base, but a GTI coming down the road is expected to attract young men. The brand will also have a WRC version.
In Ireland abour four in ten are expected to buy diesel, a much stronger proportion than the segment average. All three engines are A rated for Irish CO2 tax purposes.

Citigo launches in Ireland
Skoda Ireland has launched its Citigo city car, retailing from €9,995, writes Brian Byrne.
In 3- and 5-door version, power is from 1.0 litre petrol engines with 60/75hp, both Band A.
There are three grade levels. An automated manual version is available for €750 extra.
The car will be available with a perconal contract plan (PCP) financing from €99 a month. This involves a deposit or trade in value of around €3,300, and a residual payment of €4,200 at the end of three years, or hand back the car. The deal includes three years' free servicing.
And if all that sounds familiar, it is ... the Citigo is Skoda's version of the Volkswagen up!.
A mobile sat-nav dock is included in the specifications, and a navigation system is available for €349.

In Galway for 'The Volvo'
Maybe it’s because being the capital of the western seaboard, Galway is arguably the best city in the country to throw a party even in the rain, writes Brian Byrne.
Which is also probably why they’ve now bitten twice at the Volvo Ocean Race cherry and shown the seaside capitals of the world how it’s done. Doing it so well as the penultimate host last time that they won the race close for this one.
This weekend is the grand finale to an exeptional week of global interest in the city of the pirate queen Grainne Ni Mhaille. Taking the ’is feidir linn’ attitude of Barak Obama to the next level of ’let’s do it global’, the organisers, if a pun can be excused because it’s the best description there is, pushed out the boat in truly magnificent measure.
So even if you had no interest in sailing boats or the sea at all, getting to Galway this last week for even a day was something that has only previously the kind of ’must do’ for this writer’s generation when Doolin in County Clare was a musical and cultural Mecca.
It seemed like everybody in the nation wanted to be Galway people this week. And getting in through the traffic on Friday afternoon was an experience that suggested every one of those people were also trying to get in there. At the same time.
That the rain followed those of us coming from the east didn’t dampen the buzz hardly at all. There were round-the-world sail racing ships to see, music to hear, food to eat, drink to imbibe.
But most of all, Galway this week was about walking. Divided into two 'villages' of entertainment, enterprise and activity, everything was linked by a myriad of fringe presentations, serious and playful workshops in business, tourism and the arts. The best, and indeed the only way to see it all was on foot. Its walkability is one of Galway's charms as a city, and this made it easy to build this week o0f festivities into it.
It is also too all about Volvo, a brand that encompasses much more than the cars and trucks with which we are most familiar. For the six sailing teams that set off last October in Alicante and arrived in Galway this week after taking the long way around the globe, it's about a place in the sea. As it is for local pleasure sailors who are a big part of the buzz this week.
For those who thronged the Volvo Pavilion it was an eye-opener to the range of technologies which Volvo companies are involved in. From the City Safe car safety systems which drivers could try out for themselves, through engines and components for the aerospace industries, to, of course, the trucks which are such a vital part of supplying the stores and factories of the world. And little boys could experience in simulators the driving of those trucks, a clever imprinting of the brand on young minds.
The attractions also brought other stops on the race route to Galway itself. The Abu Dhabi tourist people had falcons and Formula 1 racing to show, the entertainments included a hakka display from New Zealand, and there were many elements of Portugal and France from the stops closer to home.
But here it was really most about Ireland. At a time when our tourism, food, and knowledge-based industries are key parts of the grand plan to get us out of our current misfortune, there was much to be shown to the international media here for the Ocean Race Finale.
The Innovation Hub hosted yesterday a presentation on raising capital, chaired by Dragon's Den Bobby Kerr. The Food Pavilion had a multiplicity of Ireland's best artisan food and drink, and the culinary skills of Chef Neven Maguire. And Irish fashion was high on the catwalk show of the International Design Collective introduced by Victoria Smurfit.
The official entertainments were more than matched by the hubbub on the city's main thoroughfares last night. Shop Street was thronged with people out for a bit of fun and chat, entertained by a range of busking acts. The languages and visible ethnicities showed that, for this wekend anyhow, Galway has become an international tourism destination second to none.
It finishes today with the final in-port competition of the six World Race teams. And while the events and attractions are unbuilt next week, no doubt the organisers of the Galway finale will be wondering where to go from here. They have 'gone global' and brought the rest of Ireland's best with them.
Now it's up to us, I guess, to keep up the momentum of recovery.
