It's another component supplier issue. Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz recalled its Citan van to repair the airbag system.

The new generation A-Class was launched in Europe last September.

Risking death on the hard shoulder

More than 800 people a year are killed or injured in Britain in incidents on hard shoulders or laybys, writes Brian Byrne.

And in research carried out by the Survive breakdown industry organisation, a quarter of drivers put themselves at risk by stopping unnecessarily on hard shoulders on British roads.

Survive analysed the responses from a survey of over 20,000 people. The results showed men more likely to stop on the hard shoulder in a non-emergency, 63 percent against 49 percent for women.

The hard shoulder is for genuine emergencies only. Drivers who stop for any other reason in Britain can be fined up to £60 and receive three penalty points.

Upgrade plans for Naas M7

Kildare County Council has displayed plans to upgrade the Naas/Newbridge bypass to three lanes in each direction, writes Brian Byrne.

The €50m project will involve construction of two new interchanges and the replacement of an access bridge. One of the interchanges, at Osberstown, will facilitate a new bypass of Sallins. The other, south of and replacing the current Junction 10 at Newhall, will provide more efficient access both to Naas and Newbridge and eliminate chronic congestion on the off-ramp at the present Junction.

The third lane on each side will be made mostly by eliminating the grass centre margin, minimising the necessity for compulsory purchase of land.

The project is expected to be ready for funding and planning applications next year. If all goes well, it could be completed in 3-4 years from now.

In is very first showing, DS3 received an 82.2 percent satisfactions core - the overall industry average was 77.6 percent - with a maximum five-star rating awarded by its owners for Performance, Service and Running Costs.

Has the electric car run out of juice?

The Nissan Leaf, the most successful electric car in the world.
With the collapse of the most ambitious electric cars scheme in this part of the world at the weekend, it's time to wonder if the spark has gone out in the whole EV experiment, writes Brian Byrne.

Better Place, substantially funded with Israeli venture capital, in partnership with Renault had hoped to make a big EV impact with operations in Denmark and Israel.

The initiative set up charging and battery-swap infrastructures, and Renault envisaged 100,000 electric car sales between the two countries, mainly from fleets.

Just 900 electric cars were bought in Israel under the scheme, and around 400 in Denmark. Better Place has already lost more than €431m on the adventure, and expects more losses as its winding-up in the Israeli court system progresses.

In a statement, Renault said the windup decision 'does not at all call into question the electric vehicle strategy of the Renault-Nissan Alliance'.

Here in Ireland a big Greens-fuelled hype was rolled out in 2008, a combined effort involving the ESB and Renault-Nissan, with smaller electric involvement from PSA Peugeot-Citroen and Mitsubishi.

The Government of the day trumpeted a 10 percent electric cars penetration by 2020, the ESB promised electric charging points at key points on the motorway system as well as in every significant town, and offered free charging points in the homes of the first 2,000 private buyers.

Local representatives of the key car companies producing electric cars talked in terms of 1,000 cars a year sales, possibly more.

At this point, it's the ESB which has come closest in fulfilling the promises. Just now there are in excess of 1,300 public charging points around the country. And through its eCars initiative, the company has done its bit in several ways to make the public and fleet operators aware of advantages which electric vehicles can offer.

Trouble is, the EV car sales haven't hit the targets. Haven't come close. Just over 200 electric passenger cars have been registered over the last three years, and around 50 electric vans.

The best performance has been Nissan's Leaf, of which 134 have been registered. The other main mover has been the Renault Fluence ZE, coming to market in 2012 a year later than the Leaf, and with 66 registered in that year. The Nissan is still attracting interest, with 19 registered this year, while there have been no Fluence ZEs listed so far in 2013, according to Motorcheck.ie.

Interesting too is the breakdown of company registrations compared to private ones. Just three of the Fluences have been registered privately, while only 24 of the Leafs have been registered to companies. Obviously, Nissan managed to persuade more private buyers of the usefullness of their EV product.

In all, last year, the market penetration of electric cars here was just under 0.2 percent. In terms of the Greens and Government forecasts five years ago, it's not looking good on the 10 percent market share for seven years' time. There are now five times more public charging points around the country than there are cars to use them. If they can find one where the parking space is not already occupied by a petrol, or more likely, diesel car.

And that's the thing. In a part of the world, Europe, where the makers of cars in all brands have been upping their efficiency by almost quantums over the last decade, mostly in diesel but most recently in low-capacity/high-power petrols, the whole EV scenario with its expense, range limitations, and concerns about battery deterioration simply doesn't fit in the financial and lifestyle calculations.

It doesn't mean the electric car is dead — again, like when GM killed its EV-1 late 90s experiment, subsequently generating a US hallmark conspiracy theory, it may be that the concept is still before its time.

In the US, sales of BEVs (mostly the Leaf with a bunch of very expensive Teslas in the mix) are actually on the rise. In 2012 sales grew on an upward trend through the year to more than 14,000, as part of some 53,000 plug-in electrics as a whole which include the range-extended cars like the Chevy Volt. In the same year, 435,000 hybrid cars were sold. Out of total car sales in the US market of 14.5m. For the pure electric BEVs that's a 0.1 percent penetration, half the Ireland rate.

This year already, almost the same number of BEVs have been registered there, and the growth trend is positive. The hybrids sales to date might be rather less than expected, at around 164,000 units. But it's all still tiny.

Worldwide, pure electric car sales in Japan represented 28 percent of the total numbers sold in 2012, followed by the US with 26 percent, China with 16 percent, France with 11 percent and Norway with 7 percent. But Norway also has in terms of EV market penetration by driving population the highest in the world, at 3.7 percent.

That's enviable, and probably why every major carmaker is still pushing the electric button. I've driven lots of EVs, including an electric Focus which is shortly going into production, for instance. There are a number of electric VWs upcoming, as well as a whole new range of BMW-built electric cars. Mercedes-Benz is pumping money into a range of Smart EVs.

Carmakers don't do that kind of thing for the fun of it. Still, it's hard to see electric motors replacing the old internal combustion engine for quite a long time to come, even if they are quite fun to drive.

As have been, for decades and decades, carnival bumper cars.

Jaguar is No. One in JD Power survey

Jaguar is the number one automotive brand in the UK for the second successive year, in JD Power and Associates/What Car? 2013 survey and Land Rover is one of the most improved brands in 6th place and entering the top ten list of manufacturers for the first time.

Jaguar claimed top spot for its XF model. The XF is the brand's highest-selling product and has received more than 100 international awards since its launch. The XF was given five-star ratings for performance, service and running costs. Owners said that they didn't regret spending a single penny on their Jaguar XF, rating it as 'excellent' across all categories. Participants noted the car's high levels of comfort and its luxurious interior and intuitive controls.

The Land Rover Discovery was the best performing nameplate for Land Rover, up 29 places and coming top of its class in that survey for reliability. The Land Rover Freelander also showe dimprovement scoring particularly well in terms of ownership experienced.

The study considered the opinions of over 16,000 UK car owners who rated 116 car models from 28 brands.

Linders Renault to open in North Dublin

One of Ireland's longest established motor dealers, Linders, will be operating the Renault and Dacia dealership in Finglas in North Dublin shortly, creating 15 new jobs.

The Linders name has been synonymous with the motor industry for over 75 years with Sonny Linders starting a repair garage in Smithfield in 1938. In 1973, Linders became the first appointed Toyota dealer in Ireland and in 2002 the operation expanded and moved to Chapelizod.

Renault has been actively recruiting new network partners and in Dublin, Michael Grant Renault in Sandymount is the most recent.

Uninsured drivers push up cost of insurance

More than a quarter of us have had our car damaged by an unidentified driver at some stage and almost seven percent have had to deal with the damage left by an uninsured driver, an AA Motor Insurance poll of over 9,800 people has found, writes Trish Whelan.

"It's frustrating when someone damages your car and doesn't own up. It might be in a supermarket car park or on the road side, or even while you are driving, and is really unfair," says Conor Faughnan of the AA.

The issue of uninsured driving is even more serious. "There is a reckless minority of drivers out there that are willing to take the risk and break the law by driving without insurance. That irresponsible minority adds up to €40 to the cost that honest motorists pay for their cover, and this problem gets worse in recessionary times."

When an uninsured driver causes damage, compensation is paid by the Motor Insurance Bureau of Ireland which acts as the insurance company and pays the cost. But we all pick up the tab for it and it's pushing up the price for the 95 percent of us who pay for motor insurance every year.

Setback for electric cars scheme

The electric car business got a major setback yesterday when the Better Place company applied in an Israeli court to be wound up, writes Brian Byrne.

The company in partnership with Renault had hoped to kick-start the EV business in a major way with operations in Denmark and Israel.

The initiative involved setting up charging and battery-swap infrastructures, with Renault envisaging 100,000 electric car sales between the two countries, mainly from fleets.

Just 900 electric cars were bought in Israel under the scheme, and around 400 in Denmark.

The company has already lost more than €431m on the initiative.

In a statement, Renault said its network in Israel and in Denmark will continue to provide after-sales servicing for Fluence ZE and these vehicles’ batteries.

The company added that this decision 'does not at all call into question the electric vehicle strategy of the Renault-Nissan Alliance'. "The Alliance is the world leader in terms of electric vehicles, and the volumes of Renault’s EVs continue to progress month after month," the statement concluded.

Fastest ever Audi RS6 Avant

Imagine driving a car that takes just 3.9 seconds for the 0-100km/h sprint.

Audi's all new third generation RS6 Avant can do just that! The downside is that it will set you back €140,300 to buy one.

The RS6 Avant is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 560hp petrol engine which replaces its predecessor's 5.0-litre V10 TSFI. Top speed is governed at 250km/h but can be increased on demand to 280km/h or 300km/h; up to 28.8mpg is possible. The 4.0 TFSI is paired with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission with shortened shift times.

It will be the first Audi RS model to feature adaptive air suspension. High-gloss, 20-inch, forged wheels in a seven twin-spoke design will be standard for Irish RS 6 models. The car also features a high level of standard specification.

It is available to order now from Audi dealerships with first customer deliveries expected in July.

Of the previous generation model, according to Motorcheck.ie, three RS6s were registered in 2008, none were registered in 2009, and one was registered in 2010.

Electric car prizes for Dublin Marathon

Renault is giving away three Fluence ZE electric cars as top prizes in the 2013 Dublin Marathon, writes Brian Byrne.

The cars will be given to the winning male and female runners, and the third will be in a draw for all official contestants.

The Fluence ZE was launched in Ireland in 2012. In that year, 66 of the 1,887 Fluences registered were electric, of which only three were bought by individuals (according to Motorcheck.ie registration statistics).

Pictured are athletes Maria McCambridge and Joe Sweeney with the Renault Fluence ZE. The Dublin Marathon takes place on Monday October 28.

Real in-car broadband on the way

It used to be that a tape deck was the ultimate technology in the radio part of a car's dashboard, but soon it will be a multi-source broadband router, writes Brian Byrne.

Computer industry giant Cisco is working with a number of car manufacturers to design in such a unit, which will automatically seek out the best broadband source at any moment, be it 3G or 4G or WiFi.

A proof of concept vehicle will be on the road in August, and Cisco says the system will be secure against any hacking attempts.

The network would also be able to work with the dedicated short range communication (DRSC) systems being developed for car-to-car communications.

Cisco says its system would also be available in aftermarket for DRSC, so that owners of current cars could upgrade to car-to-car.

Seven in ten cars are expected to have some form of embedded connectivity by 2017, according to some industry estimates.
