Danger in buying tyres online
TyreSafe says such shoppers need to make sure they put the right tyres as specified for their car. They need to be aware of the speed symbol on their original equipment tyres, and get the same one with the new ones.
Many motorists hold the misconception that their choice of speed symbol should be determined by how fast they drive. But a tyre’s speed symbol is not just a measure of the tyre’s maximum speed capability, it also provides an indication of overall performance, even at lower speeds.
"While many motorists may be feeling the pinch in the current economic climate," says Stuart Jackson of TyreSafe, "we would encourage them not to compromise on road safety. Driving on tyres with a lower speed symbol than recommended may seriously compromise vehicle handling, putting the driver and other road users at risk. It could also cause irreversible damage through exaggerated wear or sidewall cracking.”
A tyre’s speed symbol is denoted by a letter and appears immediately after the load index on the tyre sidewall.

Electric Qashqai, Megane, in development
The cars, which are coming on-stream in prototype form, are the result of the carmaker's association with the Better Place group, which is involved in major electric car initiatives in Israel and Denmark.
Meanwhile, the two companies are also developing a robotic system that could change batteries in electric cars in just 45 seconds.
This is a suggested alternative or complementary idea to having plug-in charging points in places like London.

Off on the Oz-Bus
Most people heading to Australia crib about the 30 hours of air travel and airport time, but we three decided to take a more adventurous way, the three-month haul overland on the Oz-Bus.
We, Emily, Sara and Jacinta, are three 22-year-old Galway girls and have all been good friends since secondary school. We had always wanted to go to Australia once we finished college. Mainly because Emily is an Ozzy herself! Emily is going back to Oz to live, Jacinta intends to head to New Zealand after a year in Oz and Sara wants to travel the world for as long as she doesn't run out of money!
Emily and Sara went inter-railing around Europe in 2007 so we've had a taste in backpacking and alternative methods of transport than flying. However Jacinta gets severe travel sickness so we'll see how that fares out ...! So why on earth are we getting the Oz Bus then? Well how many people can say they've visited places such as Iran and Pakistan ... India and Nepal ... etc? We think that this is an adventure of a lifetime! We want to travel the world and the Oz Bus is giving us the opportunity to see 17 countries in three continents in 13 weeks with a group of other fun-loving people with a mutual love of adventure! It's so exciting!
Sara has been doing the bit of research into the countries we're going to but Emily doesn't even know half the countries on our trip! There is so much preparation before we get on the bus that at this stage we're expecting our Oz Bus tour leader to be guiding us on what not to miss but in all fairness we will have plenty of time to read our travel guide books once we're on the bus.
We've had a few leaving parties at this stage and I think we're still in denial that we'll soon be gone. I think there may be a few tears before we get on the bus ... our Mammies are having multiple panic attacks, Emily's mother offered to pay for her to fly from Turkey to India so she could skip Iran and Pakistan! "Why can't ye just fly to Oz like every other normal person!!"
Our friends think we're crazy too ... spending three months on a bus! Some of our friends are going to fly over and meet us in Sydney in September. Luckily none of us will be leaving behind any broken hearted boyfriends -- we got rid of 'em as soon as we booked the bus! :). The last thing we want to be worrying about are boys! You're only young once and we'll only be young free and irresponsible once, we have no mortgages, loans or children to worry about so if we don't go now ... we never will!
We'll keep you updated as we travel along, check out our weekly diary on www.carandtravel.ie to hear about our crazy antics on the Oz bus!
Slán,
Emily, Sara and Jacinta.

Irish Tarmac goes to Scotland
Day one is centred around Duns with 60 miles of stages in the Lammermuir Hills and will finish with two stages run in the dark. Day two sees the event tackle over 100 miles of stages in the fast lanes of the Merse where the stages are famous for their big jumps.
Having won six of the last seven Jim Clark rallies, the slippery Berwick lanes hold no fear for Irish drivers and it is good to see all the major championship contenders entered. Eugene Donnelly won here in 2007 in a Subaru and he leads the ’09 championship on 32 points, courtesy of wins in Galway and the Circuit of Ireland. However an off-road excursion on round three on the Rally of the Lakes might force the Maghera man to drive a more cautious rally in the Skoda Fabia WRC.
Eamon Boland the reigning Tarmac champion is another Irish winner of the Jim Clark, with a victory here last year. The Wexford man is not as consisten this year but his pace in Galway and the Lakes will worry Donnelly and co. Boland has 24 Tarmac championship points.
Tim McNulty is another Subaru driver with 24 points. The Meath man will arrive in Scotland very determined for victory. He has been runner-up here on three occasions and he will be in confident mood after his dramatic win in the Lakes.
Gareth McHale was leading the Rally of the Lakes when he crashed out on day two, but he has 22 points and remains very much in the championship hunt, like his brother Aaron who trails him by four points. The brothers will be Ford Focus WRC mounted as usual.
Alastair Fisher has 12 points in the Group N section and a maximum score in Scotland could bounce the Fermanagh driver to the lead of the showroom category. He impressed many pundits with his pace and maturity on the Lakes, his first time over the classic stages in a four wheel drive car. Another driver who impressed in Killarney is Daragh O’ Riordan. Driving a Renault Clio, the Corkman is the leading two wheel drive in the championship and an amazing sixth overall in the standings.
The Jim Clark rally is also a counting round of the British rally championship, and after two rounds of that series Irish driver Keith Cronin leads Mark Higgins by four points.

IF in ferries encouragment plan
In company with all ferry operators throughout the UK and Ireland, the campaign is designed to encourage new people to take a ferry holiday.
A central element in the campaign lays emphasis on the ten top reasons to travel by ferry. These include the refinement that has come from the millions spent on new vessels, the speed and versatility of shorter check-in times, the absence of baggage restrictions and the introduction of fast ferries plus the flexibility and savings that come from the choice of fare options and cost-cutting deals that are available.
Other factors deemed to be attractive to a new generation of ferry users are the freedom that comes from travel by car or bike, the enjoyment of caravanning, camping and such like, the pet friendly facilities provided by ferry companies, the civilized nature of ferry travel with its chic cabins, lounges, shopping, cinemas and restaurants, not to mention the refreshing experience of being able to roam freely and enjoy the sea air.
With 36 million passenger journeys being made by ferry each year, and with air travel becoming more restrictive by the day, Irish Ferries Head of Passenger Sales, Declan Mescall claims that travel by ferry is on what he terms “the verge of another renaissance”.

Ralliart Evo Challenge in Cavan
With both rallies so far in this year’s Evo Challenge calendar being two-day affairs and therefore hosting two-rounds each, the Cavan rally is the first one-day, one-round event of the season.
The first Mitsubishi crew to leave the start line will be one of Ireland’s leading Group N crews, John McGlaughlin and Crawford Henderson, who will be making their Evo Challenge debut this weekend. They are almost certainly going to battle with the next Mitsubishi crew of Neil McCance/Sean Ferris who are looking for a repeat of their result last time out, when they topped the Evo Challenge timesheets in both rounds three and four on the Circuit of Ireland.
Next in line is the current championship leader Liam Egan, who again makes the trip all the way from New York to compete in the Irish Mitsubishi series. Egan is joined by Mary O’Kane and will look to deliver another consistent performance to continue his run at the top of the series standings.
Fourth Mitsubishi seed on this occasion is Brendan Cumiskey. Co-driven by Conor Foley, the 2008 Evolution Challenge Ireland Champion will be hoping for a better run this time around, having retired on the second stage last time out when a heavy landing split his car’s radiator. They are followed by Stanley Ballantine/Donnacha O’Callaghan who are another crew aiming for a trouble free run, having been sidelined in rounds two and four with mechanical issues.
A little further back in the entry list are William Mavitty/Keefe Kilcoyne who delivered a strong performance in rounds three and four and are now looking to make an impression in this year’s Evolution Challenge. They are followed by Thomas White/Robert Murphy who have had their car repaired following an off on the Circuit of Ireland and are therefore hoping for a less dramatic weekend.
Rounding off the Evo Challenge entries are Michael Murray/Brian Daniels, who are making their return to the Mitsubishi series having contested a full season last year.
The Hotel Kilmore Stages Rally starts and finishes in Cavan and features nine stages – three stages ran three times - on Sunday, the total of which provides a competitive distance of 135 kilometres (84 miles).

Greens 'don't understand scrappage'
Alan Nolan was responding to comments made by both Dan Boyle, chairman of the GP and party leader minister John Gormley, following motor dealer Bill Cullen's recent condemnation of the Greens' stance on the 'Late Late Show'.
"They just don't understand the dynamics of scrappage," he said, "which is about encouraging people to buy cars they wouldn't otherwise have done. There's no net loss to the Exchequer ... there's a net gain because they are getting part of a tax that wouldn't have been taken in the first place anyhow."
Noting that the current job losses in the motor trade have exceeded 5,000 and 'are heading for 6,000' since last year, Nolan added that the previous scrappage scheme here was 'enormously successful'. "The state gained €100m from that. The scheme is NOT giving Irish exchequer money to jobs abroad, it is actually using it as an incentive that can protect jobs and collect extra money for the state in a very painless way."
He noted that current scrappage schemes in Germany, France and Italy have already substantially boosted sales of cars.
SIMI and car trade leaders have consistently asked for a scrappage scheme here since the business virtually closed down at the end of last year, but without success.
