Survey finds Skoda best for re-sale value
A report by Motorcheck.ie which compared almost 12,530 pricing samples between January 2009 and July 2012 showed that Czech car maker Skoda provided the greatest return on investment of any brand, writes Brian Byrne.
The research focused on the best selling model variants across four categories including both petrol and diesel options for small hatch, mid range hatch, mid range saloon, and large saloon vehicles. It showed that Skoda claimed No. 1 spot in three of these categories, best diesel option for small hatch (Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI), mid range saloon (Octavia 1.9TDI), and large saloon (Superb 1.9TDI Greenline). The Superb is pictured above.
Commenting on the rankings, Raymond Leddy of Skoda Ireland said the brand's used cars are 'always in demand as trade in vehicles from our network of retailers'.
Over the three year period, the outstanding Skoda models retained 67% (Fabia), 62% (Octavia) and 61% (Superb) of their original value.
The results show that buying a small diesel hatchback is the shrewdest decision when it comes to residual values as they on average retain 62 percent of their new value after three years.

Gabriele Tarquini had to defend his fourth position from the attacks of a brilliant Alex MacDowall who came in 5th overall and claimed top spot among the independent racers at the wheel of a Bamboo Engineering Cruze.
Race 2 was won by Stefano D'Aste, chased by Pepe Oriola, Tarquini, Bennani and the Chevrolets that, for once, were not in the position to benefit from their superior power as Huff, Menu and Muller finished in 4th, 5th and 6th place.
All three Chevrolet drivers finished Race 1 in the points with the results of the first leg of the WTCC Asian tour seeing Yvan Muller and Rob Huff still heading the Drivers' standings on equal points (345) and Alain Menu gaining 10 points on his team mates to climb to 307.
With the Manufacturers' championship decided, all the attention is focused on the battle for the Drivers' crown which has become a private affair between the Chevrolet drivers, the only ones still in the race for the title.
The championship resumes in two weeks at Shanghai, on 4 November, for Rounds 21 and 22.

New CR-V arrives
Honda Ireland has launched its new generation CR-V SUV in a price range of €37,785-€50,095, writes Trish Whelan.
The fourth generation of the vehicle that established the concept of 'soft-roader' is available in four grade levels and is powered by a more efficient version of the brand's familiar 2.2 diesel which has brought the tax rating down from E to C.
A 2WD version with Honda's upcoming new 1.6 diesel will be available from autumn of next year.
Although shorter and lower than the car it replaces, the new CR-V offers more room inside and has a class-leading cargo space of up to 1,669L.
The AWD system operates from startup but the vehicle slips immediately into 2WD once it senses there's no traction loss. On a quick experience during the launch day it proved to be very capable on rutted tracks and (very) slippery and mucked up grass.
The CR-V is very highly specified with standard across the range Intelligent AWD, 17-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, electric windows, remote audio controls, driver's seat electric lumbar adjustment, LED daytime running lights, Hill start assist, a deflation warning system, and USB and Aux plug-in points for iPods.
Some 7,000 units of CR-V have been sold in Ireland since the nameplate was launched here in 1996.
Pictured at the launch event are Adrian Cole, MD of Universal Honda Ireland; Emmet Kavanagh, marketing manager; and Frank Kennedy, sales director.

VW concepts small SUV
With the small and compact SUV segments showing significant market share growth in Europe and other markets, it's quite likely that Volkswagen will build a small SUV, writes Brian Byrne.
The strongest hint yet came this week with the Taigun Concept revealed at the Sao Paulo Motor Show.
The 4-seat car is built on the same architecture as that used for the up! and the Concept's power unit is a 110hp 3-cylinder 1.0 turbocharged petrol engine.
At 3.86m long, it doesn't take up much road space, but the 2.47m wheelbase provides good interior space for occupants.

Model range pumps VW
The ’strength’ of the brand’s model range is one reason why Volkswagen Group products are holding up well in the sales figures against a car market in decline, according to one of its senior managers in Ireland, writes Brian Byrne.
John Donegan, manager of the Volkswagen division in the Group, says wide variety of models, with something to suit every need, has helped VWGI’s performance.
He was speaking at the international drive event for the new Golf, which comes to Ireland in December.
In the niche areas, he said the up! mini car had done particularly well for the brand, in what is a small segment in Ireland. He said this was particularly helpful in the light of only the 3-door version being available during much of the year.
He also suggested that the new generation Beetle will do well next year, now that it is becoming available and visible. The car as redesigned will likely appeal to men as much as women, while the attraction of the previous version was tilted primarily towards female buyers.
Another car performing well is the CC, the executive coupe based on the Passat, which has become popular in the business fleet arena. The Scirocco sports coupe based on the Golf platform is also selling in satisfactory numbers despite no marketing push being given to it.
Donegan forecasts a total market of some 75,000 units next year, down on the projected outcome of 80,000 for this year, itself running 12 percent short of the 2011 sales.
He said the main issue is consumer confidence, with many people putting off changing their cars because they’re not sure if they’ll have a job in the short term future.

Traffic 'eye' in space
Canada is to launch a satellite in the next couple of months to keep an eye on traffic, writes Brian Byrne.
Nope, not traffic down here. In space in near earth orbit where the bulk of communications and surveillance satellites spin around the globe.
It's got so crowded up there with working satelites and 'space junk' of dead rocket motors and other stuff, a bird's eye unit is needed to allow satellite operators to steer out of potentially catastrophic and expensive collisions.
The Sapphire satellite is being launched by a private aerospace company, using a rocket service based in India.

Cascada targets Audi A5 Cabriolet
Opel will launch its new Cascada cabriolet early next year with a tilt towards the premium segment positioning of Audi, writes Brian Byrne.
The 2-door four-seater replaces the Astra TwinTop, and uses a fabric rather than steel folding roof, which can be opened or stowed in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h.
The Cascada is longer and wider than the Astra predecessor, and will be specified and priced to target the Audi A5 and similar. It may also be sold in the US as a Buick.
There are elements of Insignia styling in the shape, though Cascada is much more strongly sculpted.
Engines will utilise Opel’s current turbocharging technology and will range from 1.4 through 2.0 litres.

Volkswagen goes to 3-year warranty
All Volkswagens sold in Ireland from January will have a 3-year factory warranty, writes Brian Byrne.
“Our dealers are delighted with the move,” says John Donegan of the Volkswagen division of VW Group Ireland. “It has become an issue in Ireland in recent years, with the provision of longer warranties by a number of competing brands.”
The previous warranty duration was two years. Both Skoda and SEAT within the Volkswagen Group went to three years earlier this year.
Japanese brands have traditionally given 3-year warranties, and in recent years Hyundai moved with a 5-year guarantee and Kia gives seven years.
A number of other brands have offered warranty extensions, but generally these have been insurance based, with the manufacturer outsourcing the liability.

Check those tyres
Six in ten motorists drive with tyres that are underinflated, according to tyre manufacturer Michelin which is currently advising Irish motorists to be sure and get a grip this winter.
According to experts at Michelin, cold weather can affect a tyre’s pressure because as air temperature drops, so does tyre pressure.
Also, with normal tyres, low temperatures can harden the tread, reducing grip on slippery surfaces so much so that, during winter, when temperatures drop below 7degC, the advice is to fit tyres designed specifically for winter conditions. These have rubber compounds that remain flexible to improve grip and braking performance.

Changing buying habits may take time
The proposal to ’seasonalise’ car registration in Ireland may not make any immediate difference to Irish car buyers’ habits, writes Brian Byrne.
That’s the view of Volkswagen Ireland’s John Donegan, who says any such changes will need time to show real effects.
The advent of the ’13’ registration plate has prompted increased interest in the idea, one which the Irish motor trade has been pushing for some years.
There’s speculation that, to avoid a ’13’ plate, the Government will use the issue to divide the registration process, with ’131’ prefixing registrations in the first half of the year and ’132’ prefixing the second half.
This would, in time, provide two registration ’high points’ as there is in Britain.

Ford launches B-MAX, Focus ST here
Ford has launched the new B-MAX in Ireland at a starting price of €19,170, writes Trish Whelan.
The small MPV is available with 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6 auto petrol engines and a new 1.5 diesel. Tax bands range from A-C, and there are two grades, with prices topping out at €26,430.
A pillarless Easy Access Door System provides unobstructed entry and exit with hinged front doors and sliding rear doors integrating the central body pillars.
The car is also the first European Ford to offer the company’s SYNC communications integration system which enables users to connect mobile phones and music players by Bluetooth or USB, make hands-free telephone calls, and control music and other functions using voice commands. It also reads text messages aloud from compatible phones connected using Bluetooth.
SYNC also enables B-MAX to offer the innovative new Emergency Assistance feature which will call the local emergency services operator in the event of an accident.
At the launch yesterday, Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland said the B-MAX 'challenges traditional small car thinking'.
Ford has also launched a 250hp ST version of the Focus, powered by a 2.0 petrol engine with CO2 emissions 20 percent better than its predecessor.
The ST is priced at €35,170 and €37,470, the latter with the SYNC system on board.
PCP popular with VW, Audi buyers
Volkswagen Ireland has just completed a financing deal with Volkswagen Bank which will see a PCP option on the new generation Golf working out at €239 a month, writes Brian Byrne. This involves a 30 percent deposit, a rate of 4.9 percent, and a balloon payment or handing back the car at the end of the 3-year period.
Alternatively an APR 3.9 percent HP option is available.
The PCP option is the financing solution used by 50 percent of Audi buyers. Some 20 percent of buyers of Volkswagen brand cars are opting for the PCP system, which has proved particularly popular with the up! city car where a deal offers a €99 a month repayment.
VWGI expects an increasing interest in PCP, a financing option which has long been popular in major markets such as the US and continental Europe.
The Volkswagen Bank has given about €110m in loans in Ireland since it was set up here.

First Drive: VW Golf Mk 7
If you’re a VW Golf fan, you’re in big company. More than 29m of them have been produced since the nameplate was first rolled out in 1974, writes Brian Byrne.
If you’re a Golf fan since that time, you’ll have watched it develop through six generations without ever losing key styling cues that identify it as a Golf.
If you’re a Golf fan, you’ll be waiting for mid-December in your local VW dealership to see the Mk 7 Golf arrive on the showroom floor.
And you’ll be very happy to see that the essential shape that has become the iconic car of Volkswagen in almost four decades still looks like it should do. Like a Golf. Arguably only two other cars in the world have retained their original visual identities. One of them’s a VW too, the Beetle. The other is a Porsche, now coincidentally owned by VW.
Nissan system stops wrong pedal crashes
Nissan has developed a system that will help stop accidents when drivers hit the accelerator instead of the brake, writes Brian Byrne.
In countries where automatic transmissions are common, there are regular accidents when cars run into walls ahead of their parking space instead of stopping because of mispedaling.
The system, Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication, uses cameras to see what's in front of the car, and if it senses that the car is accelerating instead of braking, it will take over both controls and stop the car.
EAPM will first be rolled out in a Nissan people-carrier in Japan.

Road rage is rife
Nearly four in ten Irish drivers admit to shouting or getting angry behind the wheel on a weekly basis—with a very angry 11.5 per cent admitting to daily bouts of road rage.
That's suggested by a recent Continental Tyres study carried out among Irish drivers, which also revealed around 13 percent of motorists have got out of their car to confront another driver.
Nearly one in three road users ‘expect’ to experience aggressive or intimidating driving whilst out in the car.
Paddy Murphy of Continental Tyres Ireland say the figures are 'shocking'. "If motorists feel intimidated or angry they will lack concentration, increasing the danger for other road users, never mind not enjoying the driving experience," he says while urging drivers to consider using more courtesy while driving
The study found that when on the receiving end of road rage 40 percent of respondents feel angry, 21 percent feel shaken and nearly one in five (18.9 per cent) feel like retaliating.

Early drive in new Golf impresses
There will be 25 VW Golf variants on sale in Ireland by early next year, writes Brian Byrne, and driving two of them today convinces me that Volkswagen has come up with another real winner.
Granted, the two variants were top of their sectors, a 1.4 TSI petrol with 140hp that puts pizazz into Golf motoring at fuel efficiency that rivals the nameplate's current diesels, and a new 150hp 2.0 TDI that has given more oomph with less fuel cost.
In the twisty but excellent roads of north Sardinia, they showed off equally zippy performances, and a handling ability that arguably brings Golf back to the top of the league in driving dynamics.
With a caveat, though: both cars had VW's adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control, which electronically changes the shocks and suspension to suit different driving modes. But there's a new 'ordinary' rear axle too which will be on all versions under 120hp. It is 15kg lighter than the unit on the Mk 6 Golf and is a contributor to a 100kg saving in weight of the new car against the old.
Indeed, the weight of the Mk 7 Golf is now the same as was the smaller Mk 4 of 15 years ago, with consequent gains in agility and fuel efficiency.
The new Golf has a longer wheelbase, made possible by moving the front wheels forward in the car's 'footprint'. This allows more room inside for occupants, where there is also 33cm more shoulder room.
Next year is going to be 'the year of the Golf' in a big way, with the new car available from January in most key markets, and upcoming special variants including the new generation GTI, GTD, and even more frugal Bluemotion than the current one.
From mid-December, Irish VW dealers will have the 1.2 and 1.4 petrol TSIs, and the 90hp 1.6 TDI, with other options becoming available through coming months.
The new Golf is a high-tech car in many ways, but especially in the new TSI 1.4 engine, which is available optionally with automatic cylinder deactivation (in translation the acronym is ACT) that cuts fuel and ignition to two of the four cylinders when the load on the engine is least. This trims CO2 emissions from 119g/km to 109g/km.
There's also a neat element to the central information screen for sat-nav and other functions—by bringing your hand close to it, the function touch-keys become visible, disappearing again when you take your hand away.
Lots more, and I'll do a more extensive first appraisal for Monday. In the meantime, Volkswagen is determined that what is now the iconic car which defines the company will gain further converts.
Price range in Ireland has already been announced at €19,995-€31,645, with a recommended €750 dealer-related charge across all models.
Subaru XV again scores highest safety rating
Subaru's new compact crossover, the XV, has received the highest possible safety rating in crash safety tests in the USA.
Subjecting the Subaru XV to moderate overlap frontal, side rollover and impact tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the car a 'good' rating, which is the top rank across all tests.
Earlier this year, it had been awarded the maximum 5-stars from Euro NCAP following rigorous safety tests, receiving the highest score ever recorded for child occupant protection at 90 percent.
The car is available here in Ireland priced from €28,495 for the manual transmission version. Engines include a 2.0 diesel, a 1.6 petrol as well as a 1.6 CVT which provides them with an automatic in the range. The CVT adds another €1,000 to the entry level price.

Ford puts roar into Focus
For Ford drivers, life in the fast lane has become life in the quiet lane as engineers raise the bar for refinement by cutting noise and improving soundproofing, writes Trish Whelan.
However, for hot hatch drivers, engine roar is an integral part of the driving experience and Ford engineers have come up with a unique electronically controlled solution that delivers a sporty soundtrack or a more peaceful journey, depending on driver inputs.
Ford of Europe's vehicle sound quality expert Bjoern Boettcher says "Focus ST drivers want to hear the engine sing when they put their foot on the gas and Ford cars are engineered to be quiet inside the cockpit, so we have to pull out a few tricks to give enthusiastic drivers the sound they crave - and that's where our Sound Symposer comes in. It amplifies the sound produced by the engine and channels it along a pipe to the dashboard panel where it is easily audible to the driver."
The system was developed specially for the new 250PS 2.0 EcoBoost Focus ST. The new Focus ST is on sale in Ireland now, available as a 5-door hatchback priced from €35,170.

Skoda Octavia just got Exclusive!
The Skoda Octavia has been given a specification enhancement for 2013, writes Trish Whelan.
The new Octavia Exclusive, which made its first public appearance at the National Ploughing Championships last month, is available nationwide in both hatchback and Combi (estate) body styles.
Engine wise, Skoda's low C02 diesels have been retained including their Band-A, 1.6TDI, 105bhp, and Band-B 1.2TSI 105bhp direct injection petrol unit. For those who demand more power, a 2.0TDI, 140bhp diesel unit is also offered. All engines are also available with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
But it is its specification that justifies the Octavia its Exclusive title with factory fitted Satellite Navigation System, 16-inch alloy wheels, and half leather upholster all added to an already impressive list including cruise control, BlueTooth phone preparation, parking sensors and climate controlled air-conditioning that were standard on the outgoing Octvia models.
Prices start from €19,995 for the 1.2 TSI, 105bhp petrol version, and from €22,995 for the 1.6 TDI diesel.
The Octavia is Skoda's best performing Irish car with over 35,000 units sold in Ireland since 1998. A limited quantity of these new Octavia Exclusives are available and Raymond Leddy, Skoda Ireland's Head of Marketing advises those interested to speak to their local dealership before January regarding availability to avoid disappointment.
Skoda has also enhanced the Octavia RS model with €900 worth of free equipment including new 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, a new interior and Satellite Navigation system.

Toyota recall for window switch
Toyota Ireland say they expect only about 1 percent of cars currently under a recall will be found to need attention for a potentially faulty master electric window switch.
Aftersales Manager Brendan Steers said that in the vast bulk of cases in the 36,000-car Irish recall, no remedy other than the use of a special lubricant will be required. "If a switch is found to be sticky, we may change a switch board," he said.
The recall is part of a 7m vehicles operation, involving in Ireland 9,232 Yaris, 10,357 Auris, 14,112 Corolla and 2,392 RAV 4 vehicles manufactured between September 2006 and December 2008.
Toyota Ireland will be writing directly to those owners involved in the recall to arrange to have their vehicles checked by their local dealer at a time convenient for them and at no cost to the owner.
Should a Toyota owner have a query they can contact Toyota Ireland on 01 4190222.
